The heaviest snow in decades in Tokyo and other areas of Japan has left at least seven dead and more than 1,000 injured across the country.

 

As much as 10.6 inches of snow was recorded in Tokyo by late Saturday, the heaviest fall in the capital for 45 years, according to meteorologists.

 

The storm hit Tokyo on the eve of its gubernatorial election.

 

Observers say the heavy snowfall may affect voter turnout in the city of 13 million people.

 

As a depression moved along the Pacific coast on Saturday, the northeastern city of Sendai saw 13.8 inches of snow, the heaviest in 78 years.

 

Local media said at least seven people have been killed in snow-linked accidents – mostly crashes after their cars skidded on icy roads.

 

In central Aichi prefecture, a 50-year-old man died after his car slipped on the icy road and rammed into an advertisement steel pole, a local rescuer said.

 

Public broadcaster NHK reported at least 1,051 people were injured across the nation, many of whom had slipped on the ground or fallen while shovelling the snow off their roofs, NHK said.

 

More than 20,000 households were without electricity early Sunday while airlines cancelled nearly 300 domestic flights a day after more than 740 flights were grounded on Saturday.

 

Nearly 5,000 people were stranded at Narita airport on Saturday as traffic linking the airport to the capital was disrupted, NHK said.

 

Further snowfall is expected Sunday in the northern part of the country, the Japan Meteorological Agency said.

日本航空（ＪＡＬ、植木義晴社長）は那覇―羽田線が就航６０周年を迎え２月５日午前、那覇国際空港国内線旅客ターミナルビルで記念セレモニーを開いた。

 

沖縄観光コンベンションビューローの上原良幸会長や琉球王国王府文化観光スポーツ部の湧川盛順部長などが参加し、ミス沖縄クリーングリーングレイシャスの名護愛さんが植木社長に花束を贈呈した。

 

植木社長は「那覇―羽田路線は日本航空５番目の路線として開設され、歴史のある路線。沖縄の発展に伴って路線を拡充してきた。今後も沖縄と共に歩んでいきたい」とあいさつした。

 

那覇―羽田路線は、本土復帰前の１９５４年に国際線として開設され、週２往復で運航した。

 

開設当初の年間搭乗者数は約２５００人で、現在１日１２往復を運航し、年間約３００万人が利用している。

Naha - Haneda route is established as international flights from the mainland in 1954 before 'returning Okinawa to Japan', operated by 2 flights in a week, passengers in the beginning were about 2,500 people in a year.

 

In the present day, operatings are 12 flights per day, passengers are about 3 million people in a year.

The Nikkei-225 index, which soared 2.70 percent on Wednesday, lost 3.22 percent, or 495.16 points, to 14,888.75 in early trade.

神奈川県立歴史博物館で遺跡展、江戸期の生活振り返る／横浜

 

神奈川県埋蔵文化財センター（横浜市南区）が発掘した江戸期の日用品を通して人々の生活を振り返る遺跡展「地中に埋もれた江戸時代の道具たち」が１月１１日から、神奈川県立歴史博物館（横浜市中区）で開かれる。

 

１月１０日には関係者を招いた内覧会が開かれ、来館者は当時の生活の豊かさに触れた。

 

遺跡展では、江戸初期から幕末にかけて（１７世紀初頭～１９世紀後半）の約２７０年間に作られた道具類を紹介。

 

武家屋敷や商家、農村などから出土した陶磁器、金属製品、木製品、浮世絵など５０７点を展示する。

 

たとえば食器は、江戸初期には地味で小ぶりだったが、庶民文化が進展した元禄を過ぎると、鮮やかな青を使った大皿が好まれるようになったという。

 

埋蔵文化財センターの冨永樹之副主幹は「茶を一つとっても、煎茶を飲むようになったのは江戸後期に確立した文化。器の変化を追うことで、現代との結びつきを考える契機になると思う」と話している。

Team Yaeyama Norin makes final in low-carbon championship

 

Yaeyama Norin High School Civil Engineering Department Environmental Engineering Project Team made it to the final in the Student Project Division for the Low-carbon Championship 2014.

 

Groups, companies and schools nationwide presented their projects for preventing global warming in the championship.

 

On February 14 and 15, four students will take part in the final presentation at Tokyo Big Sight.

 

Yaeyama Norin High School Team will present its project with the theme of “Protect Yaeyama’s nature by recycling wood! We build a low-carbon society by creative design and manufacturing.”

 

They will present a project that makes playground equipment out of timber from forest thinning and discarded cardboard to pre-schools.

 

They promote recycling society by effectively using forest and bark for dyeing and growing mushrooms.

 

The school has been contributing to a local community by effectively using experimental forests from three years ago.

 

They will highlight the practical achievements of the projects in the final.

 

The championship had applications from 1,620 groups, with 11 groups from the student project division in the final.

 

High-ranking groups will win Environment Minister Awards.

 

Team leader and senior student Daiki Sunagawa stated, “I would like to listen to other schools’ presentations carefully and teach them to junior students.”

 

A junior student Syukyu Shimabukuro said, “I want to understand how the project is passed down from seniors, and to present it to impress other groups.”

Cafe within OIST wins Food Action Nippon Award

 

Yanbaru Harusaa’s Table Kaito +, a cafe located within the Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology (OIST), has won the excellence award in the sales and consumer promotion section of Food Action Nippon 2013.

 

Food Action Nippon is a project designed to recognize business organizations and individuals who contribute to the improvement of food self-sufficiency.

 

The award ceremony was held on December 3 in Tokyo.

 

Kaito + is a cafe jointly operated by bakery Pain de Kaito and the farming corporation Cooksonia in Nago.

 

By serving local produce, its vegetarian menu conveys the charm of vegetables produced in the Yambaru area to overseas researchers at OIST.

 

Kaito + also sells vegetables at the cafe and uses items that remain in side dishes in an attempt to reduce waste to zero.

 

It also helps provide farmers with stable revenue by buying their produce.

 

They encourage local farmers to plant sweet herbs such as coriander, which in turn helps to expand the variety of produce that the farmers grow.

 

Kyoko Ishida, manager of the Kaito + said, “We also sell ingredients that researchers from Southeast Asia cannot easily get, so both Japanese and foreigners are happy.”

 

Shinya Koizumi, a member of the Cooksonia staff points out a ripple effect, saying, “We can have a go at producing a wide variety of things. Stores that use these new vegetables in the region have also appeared. The link between the farmers and the restaurants has become stronger.”

Three days before the 50th anniversary of her father’s assassination, President Kennedy’s daughter Caroline has been greeted by cheering crowds in Tokyo as the newly appointed American ambassador to Japan.

 

She travelled to Imperial Palace in a horse-drawn carriage – as new ambassadors in the country are entitled to do – but few will have experienced the kind of reception she did, with thousands lining the streets.

 

The fact that Kennedy is the only living child of the late president – and her ties to Barack Obama – have heightened interest in her appointment.

 

The 55-year-old briefly met His Majesty Emperor Akihito to hand over a letter from the US president with her credentials.

 

She is the first woman to be named US ambassador to Japan.

 

Caroline Kennedy’s appointment has been welcomed – she knows the country well, having first visited in 1978, and spent her honeymoon there.
