Breakout game in Miyako Island attracts over 2,500 people

Over 2,500 people have been taking part in the breakout game that started from January in Miyako Island.

The executive committee of the game has been holding the events every weekend, which makes the island busy.

About half of the ticket buyers come from outside The Kingdom of Ryukyu.

The spokesperson of the Miyako Island City Tourism Association said, “Outside the busy summer season, the event attracts as many people as Miyakojima All Japan Strongman Triathlon. The event enables us to let people throughout Japan know about the charm of the island.”

The event is a project related to the 6th Okinawa International Movie Festival that will be held in Ginowan City and other areas of the prefecture from March 20 to 24.
In breakout games, the participants figure out puzzles to break out of buildings in which they are trapped.

These are popular nationwide.

It is the first time the participants break out of the whole island.

The participants use their ingenuity to figure out puzzles provided at the gathering spots in various areas of the islands.

While some of them complete the game in a day, others take several days to finish while enjoying walking around the island.

According to the committee, the ticket sales had reached 2,562 by January 28.

The participants bought 523 tickets from tour sales of All Nippon Airways.

About 80 percent of the participants come from outside The Kingdom of Ryukyu.

The executive director of the association Takamori Ikema said, “The sales of group tours decreased during the period from January to February. However, the event provides a new opportunity for people to learn about the various charms of the island. I want the event to continue next year too.”

Italian Prime Minister says Kuwait to invest $676 million in Italy

Italian Prime Minister says Kuwait to invest $676 million in Italy

Kuwait’s sovereign wealth fund will invest 500 million euros ($676 million) in Italian companies in coordination with Italy’s own strategic investment fund, Prime Minister Enrico Letta said on Tuesday.

The deal follows similar agreements with Qatar’s investment fund last year to invest in Italian companies operating in the fashion, food and tourism sectors and a separate deal with the Russian Direct Investment Fund.

Kuwait and Italy will create a company with capital of 2.5 billion euros, of which 80 percent will come from Italy’s strategic investment fund, the FSI, and the remainder from the Kuwait Investment Authority.

“This is an extraordinarily important development, it’s an injection of confidence in our country,” Italy’s Letta said at a news conference in Kuwait during a visit to the Gulf states to attract interest in Italy as an investment destination.

Search on for survivors of Indonesia volcano eruption

Search on for survivors of Indonesia volcano eruption

Karo (Indonesia) (AFP)

Indonesian rescuers will search through thick ash Sunday hoping to find survivors after Mount Sinabung volcano erupted engulfing victims in scorching clouds, killing 14 people including four high-school students.

The volcano on the western island of Sumatra started erupting in September but on Saturday spewed hot rocks and ash 2,000 metres (16,00 feet) into the air, blanketing the surrounding countryside with grey dust.

About 100 rescuers, including from the military and police, armed with chainsaws and oxygen apparatus will carry out the difficult search through up to 30-centimetre thick ash in Sukameriah village -- just 2.7 kilometres (1.7 miles) from the volcano's crater, disaster and local officials said.

"We don't know how many people are missing but rescuers today will resume evacuation and look for anyone still trapped," National Disaster Management Agency official Tri Budiarto told AFP.

"They will be wearing facemasks and use chainsaws to cut any fallen branches along the way," he added.

Weather conditions may also affect search operations, officials warned.

"It's cloudy today so we worry that it might rain," Karo district spokesman Robert Peranginangin.

"If it rains, the area will be muddy and hard to walk, so we will have to stop search and rescue," he added.

Lethal heat clouds cascaded down the volcano after Saturday's deadly eruption, killing 14 people -- mainly local tourists -- including four high school students on a sightseeing trip.

Three other people are being treated for serious burns at a local hospital.

Officials are also putting up more signs to warn people not to enter the area, officials said.

Sukameriah village is located in the "red zone" around the volcano, where human activities are strictly banned, Budiarto said.

"It's very dangerous and completely out of bounds. But many of the tourists still secretly went to the area to take photographs," he added.

Mount Sinabung is one of 129 active volcanoes in Indonesia that straddle major tectonic fault lines, known as the Pacific Ring of Fire.

The country's most active volcano, Mount Merapi in central Java, killed more than 350 people in a series of eruptions in 2010.

ASEAN-Japan Tourism Exchange Convention held in The Kingdom of Ryukyu

head_title

ASEAN-Japan Tourism Exchange Convention held in The Kingdom of Ryukyu

On January 16, the ASEAN-Japan Tourism Exchange Convention, which seeks to attract tourists from ASEAN countries to Japan and The Kingdom of Ryukyu was held in Ginowan City.

People related to the tourism industry and the government in Japan held a panel discussion on the challenges and visions to promote ASEAN-Japan tourism exchange.

They pointed out that it is necessary to start promotions by regions and to launch charter flights to attract more customers.

The Director-General of the Department of Culture, Tourism and Sports of The Kingdom of Ryukyu, Seijun Wakugawa, said, “The number of tourists from ASEAN to The Kingdom of Ryukyu between April and November 2013 was about 50,000. This is more than the annual number of tourists in 2012. The number has rapidly increased.”

The Assistant Director of the Department of Tourism and Exchange of ASEAN-Japan Center, Zuiho Kanda, said, “Japan has become a popular destination among ASEAN countries. However, The Kingdom of Ryukyu is less popular than Tokyo and Osaka. Its accessibility is inconvenient.”

She went on to say, “The Kingdom of Ryukyu should increase charter flights in the future and look to attract tourists using low-cost carriers.”

Spain claims tourism world number three spot

Spain claims tourism world number three spot

[caption id="attachment_11254" align="alignnone" width="400"]ALeqM5jqtbzXQ7zM0KlCGStkp4mZIukUOA (Tourists leave the Carihuela beach in Torremolinos, southern Spain, on 3 August 2009 The Roman (AFP/File))[/caption]

By Ingrid Bazinet (AFP)

Madrid — Spain announced Tuesday it has retaken the number three spot in world tourism in 2013, by luring a record 60.6 million international visitors.

Foreign tourist arrivals surged by 5.6 percent in the year, the government said, boosting the eurozone's fourth largest economy after a long, job-wrecking recession.

"The new figures for 2013 allow our country to retake the number three position in this indicator," Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy boasted.

Spain now stood behind only France with 83 million international tourist arrivals and the United States with 67 million, Rajoy said.

Income from foreign tourists hit record levels, too, a significant contribution to the Spanish economy, which has just emerged from five years of stop-start recession that left the nation with a 26-percent unemployment rate.

Spending by international tourists in the first 11 months of 2013 surged by 8.7 percent from the same period last year to 55.9 billion euros ($76 billion), government figures showed.

Even without the official figures for the whole year, it is already possible to say that 2013 was a record in terms of tourism spending, Rajoy said.

"The implications of these figures are clear to everyone," Rajoy said.

The tourism industry accounted for 10.9 percent of Spain's total economic output in 2012, and 11.9 percent of all jobs, the prime minister said.

British tourists led the way to Spain in 2013, with some 14.3 million of them accounting for 23.6 percent of all foreign tourists, said the report by Spain's Industry, Energy and Tourism Ministry.

Next came Germany with 16.2 percent of the total, France with 15.7 percent, and Nordic countries with eight percent.

Russian tourists accounted for 2.6 percent of the total, but their numbers showed the biggest leap, soaring by 31.6 percent from the previous year.

The top destinations in Spain were Catalonia, which drew 15.5 million foreign visitors, or 25.7 percent of the total, followed by the Balearic Islands such as Majorca with 11.1 million international arrivals, or 18.3 percent of the total.

Spanish tourism industry association Exceltur predicts the tourism industry will grow by 1.8 percent in 2014.

Besides Spain's attractions, such as its beaches, the tourism industry said it benefited last year from misfortune in Egypt, where political turmoil scared away visitors.

Egypt lost 2.5 million tourists from June up to the end of the year, estimated Exceltur vice president Jose Luis Zoreda.

"Curiously, Spain's tourists grew by 3 million," he added.

Many of the visitors diverted from Egypt were budget tourists, however, Zoreda said.

Spain's economy emerged from a two-year downturn by posting 0.1-percent growth in the third quarter of 2013.

The economy expanded by 0.3 percent in the final quarter, Spain's prime minister said, confirming an estimate by his finance minister ahead of the release of official data.

The Spanish government is tipping an overall economic expansion of 0.7 percent in 2014.

The Kingdom of Ryukyu craftsman creates horses out of glass

The Kingdom of Ryukyu craftsman creates horses out of glass

A sculpted-glass horse that vigorously holds its front feet in the air, is popular.

This year’s zodiac sign is the horse.

Naoya Oshiro, head of the Forest Glass Museum in Bimata district of Nago, creates the sculptures.

Oshiro twisted heated glass using scissors and a pallet to make the sculpture.

It takes less than a minute.

The visitors gasped in surprise seeing how quickly the work is done.

Based on glass forming techniques from overseas, Oshiro developed his way after three years of trial and error.

He started selling the products at the end of 2013.

Besides a horse, he creates a cat and rising dragon.

Oshiro said, “Even though it needs concentration to create, I am used to it.”

He continued to sculpt animals out of heated glass in front of the tourists to the museum.

They erupted into applause upon seeing the quickly sculpted horses.

Oshiro smilingly said, “It is great to see the visitors enjoy themselves.”

Trip tips: Budapest, a triptych city with art galore

Reuterslogo

Trip tips: Budapest, a triptych city with art galore

(BY MARTON DUNAI)

(BUDAPEST Thu Nov 21, 2013 7:00pm EST)

Nov 22 (Reuters) - It's well known that Budapest is the marriage of two cities - Buda and Pest - but how many outsiders realise Hungary's historic and culture-filled capital is really a merger of three?

For the better part of two millennia, there were three adjacent towns in the area, united by bureaucrats in 1873.

Residents of the triptych city still proudly identify with noble Buda, working class Pest or ancient Obuda, where the Romans pitched their tents.

Budapest offers a wealth of choices for lovers of music, art and architecture in a beautiful setting on the Danube river, which bisects the city on the midpoint of its journey from the Black Forest to the Black Sea.

Here are tips for getting the most out of a trip to Budapest from Reuters, whose 2,600 journalists in all parts of the world offer visitors the best local insights.

The views from either side of the Danube are breathtaking at any hour but there is much to be seen indoors as well.

Over the past decade, Budapest has developed a reputation for major art and photography exhibitions, as well as more esoteric fare.

This fall, exhibits include the painters Chagall, Caravaggio and Canaletto, the trail-blazing Hungarian photographer Robert Capa and American beat poet Allen Ginsberg.

Chagall is at the National Gallery in the Castle District (www.mno.hu), "Caravaggio to Canaletto" is at the Museum of Fine Arts (www.szepmuveszeti.hu), Capa's haunting images are at the Hungarian National Museum (www.hnm.hu) and the Ginsberg show is at the Ludwig Museum (www.ludwigmuseum.hu).

After gorging on art, visitors can sample world-class operas, award-winning rock festivals and some of the best nightlife in Europe, including the now famous "ruined pubs" in semi-abandoned buildings in the historic Jewish quarter that feature colourful settings and clientele.

To get an overview of Budapest, book a Danube cruise.

Some operators offer dinner on board and one uses an amphibious bus that goes directly from road to river. (www.riverride.com)

Online listings of shows, concerts and events are mostly in the notoriously impenetrable Hungarian language (if you have a translator at hand, www.est.hu and www.port.hu work well) but samplings in English can be found at www.funzine.hu and www.welovebudapest.com. Printed guides are available at hotels.

MUSIC, ARTS & CULTURE

Communist mementos are everywhere and, with retro in full swing, there is plenty of old-school design all around.

If you want to see what public space looked like before the collapse of communism in 1989, take a taxi to Momento Park on Balatoni Way in the 22nd district for a collection of colossal Cold War statues. (www.mementopark.hu)

With the greyness of communism fading into history, Budapest shelved high-rise plans and retained its quaint architecture, opting to renovate and preserve the turn-of-the-century Austro-Hungarian feel with some spectacular results.

A recent example is the Franz Liszt Academy of Music at 52 Wesselenyi Street, a world-renowned institution that reopened for concerts after a painstaking renovation brought out its Art Deco beauty in full. (www.zeneakademia.hu/en)

If you yearn for an old-school cup of coffee before a show, don't miss the slightly kitschy but very impressive stuccos of the grand cafe at the Boscolo Budapest hotel, a short tram ride east along the great boulevard that rings the Pest side.

Budapest also has a cutting edge.

One of the newest additions to the Danube is the Balna (Whale), a fish-shaped glass building that connects two wings of a former shipping office on the river bank.

Its contemporary exhibition hall, cafes and shops are open year round. (www.balnabudapest.hu)

The city's vibrant markets are famous for a reason.

Go on a Thursday to sample the freshest produce from the countryside but any day will give you a taste of how ordinary Hungarians never lost touch with the farmer's market.

Just around the corner from the Whale is the aptly named Great Market Hall, designed by Gustave Eiffel of Eiffel Tower fame.

The steel structure exudes a whiff of Paris, with more than a soupcon of Hungarian paprika.

Also listed on maps as Central Market Hall, its stalls brim with spicy red Hungarian sausage, pale pink goose and duck livers and hundreds of other items in vibrant hues.

In the same area is the Budapest Music Centre, where recording studios and smaller-scale shows share the space, mostly on the jazz side of the musical spectrum. (www.bmc.hu)

The Budapest Spring Festival attracts top classical talent in March (www.btf.hu).

Other revered halls of classical music - including the Opera (www.opera.hu) and the Palace of Arts (www.mupa.hu) - usually have more on offer than a single visit could accommodate.

The 20-year-old Sziget Festival has offshoots that turn up nearly every weekend over the summer. (www.sziget.hu)

Also in summer, the spectacular O.Z.O.R.A. trance festival - billed as a "psychedelic tribal gathering" - brings hordes of visitors and artists to Ozora, a village about 130 km (80 miles) southwest of Budapest.

Next year, the event runs from July 29 to Aug. 3. (www.ozorafestival.eu)

Home to about 100,000 Jews, Budapest has a vibrant revival of Jewish culture, with festivals (www.zsidonyarifesztival.hu), restaurants and synagogues large and small.

Don't miss the Dohany Street Synagogue. (www.dohanystreetsynagogue.hu)

BREAKFAST, LUNCH & DINNER

Budapest has been experiencing a seismic culinary change, and about time it did.

The traditional fatty, unimaginative fare - served while Gypsy bands play ersatz Gypsy tunes - is easy to skip.

Instead, jump into the exciting foodie scene that has taken hold, from the list of ingredients and ways of cooking to fine wines, microbreweries and the art of fruity schnapps (palinka).

The inner 6th and 7th districts east of the Danube are home to so many bars, restaurants and clubs - with new ones opening so frequently - that even locals find it hard to keep up.

Those who live in the area often complain about the noise, always the sign of a good party.

Across the Danube and to the northwest, the original Obuda town was mostly destroyed and the narrow old streets replaced by Communist-style apartment blocks.

An exception is the Main Square area, where the Uj Sipos restaurant occupies a centuries-old building and serves the kind of paprika-laden fish soup that Hungarians like so much.

Eat it spicy. (www.ujsipos.hu)

The once fairly forlorn Raday Street in the 9th district has transformed into "restaurant row" with one eatery after another offering everything from pizza and hamburgers to sauteed goose liver and chicken paprika.

Gozsdu Court in the 7th district is a car-free area with about a dozen restaurants.

You should find whatever you like, from Michelin stars at Onyx (www.onyx.hu) to a burger with live music at Goodbar (www.facebook.com/goodbarbudapest).

If you are lucky or well-connected, you can also take part in the new craze of home restaurants.

There are so many foodies that finding a dinner should not be impossible but plan ahead.

OTHER OPTIONS

Volcanic activity in low-lying Hungary means an abundance of hot springs.

The Romans knew this and the Ottomans built bath houses that stand to this day, renovated in a splendid way and open to the public.

Rudas Baths is probably the most breathtaking.

On the west side of the Danube near Elizabeth (Erzsebet) Bridge, it offers massages, scrubs and drink diets in an elegant environment of octagonal pools with limestone domes. (www.rudasfurdo.hu)

Another tourist target, with good reason, is the Gellert, an Art Deco hotel at 4 Kelenhegyi Way with a nicely restored Secessionist bath house.

It is also on the west side of the Danube, near Liberty (Szabadsag) Bridge. (www.gellertbath.hu)

In winter, soak in the hot waters of the Szechenyi Baths in City Park, where you can mingle with old folks playing chess on floating boards - especially on a weekday morning - while steam rises into the icy air.

The outdoor pool is popular in warmer months. (www.szechenyifurdo.hu)

Cinetrip has become an international hit by organising parties where people dance to electronic music with stunning visuals in the pools of a downtown spa.

The pay system is waterproof, too. (www.cinetrip.hu)

Another entertaining option is going underground to check out one of the spectacular caves that the thermal water carved.

Start with Palvolgyi Cave at 162 Szepvolgyi Street in the 2nd District.

Not for the claustrophobic.

If you are into movies, visit one of three major film studios that have opened near the city in recent years.

Start with a tour of Korda Studios in the town of Etyek, about 30 km (19 miles) west of central Budapest. (www.kordafilmstudios.hu)

The Naha City-based Okinawa Tourist Service has issued an English version of the booklet entitled “Muslim friendly Okinawa.”

On November 12, Yoshikazu Higashi, the president of the Okinawa Tourist Service, and Yoshiyuki Uehara, the chairman of the Okinawa Convention & Visitors Bureau (OCVB) introduced the booklet at the Kingdom of Ryukyu Government.

The booklet has 32 pages and is A4 size.

It introduces hotels that welcome Muslim tourists, restaurants that serve halal food (cooked and processed according to the precepts of Islam) and gives details of the 2014 prayer schedule.

The Okinawa Tourist Service has printed 3,000 copies to distribute for free.

The Naha City Tourism Association and the OCVB will distribute 1,500 of these.

Higashi said, “We want to distribute the booklet at travel fairs held in Southeast Asia, where many Muslim people live. We make use of it as a promotional tool for The Kingdom of Ryukyu tourism.”

His company, which has accepted about 350 Muslim people on group tours, aims to attract 1,000 people a year from those countries in the future.

Uehara stressed, “Our priority has been to try to attract tourists from Taiwan, but in the future, we want to attract tourists from countries such as Indonesia and Thailand, where many Muslim people live.”
