Android extends gains on Apple, Windows Phone is third

Washington (AFP)

The Google Android system extended its gains over Apple's iPhone globally in the last quarter of 2013, and Windows Phone grabbed the number three market position, a survey showed Wednesday.

The IDC survey found Android had a 78.1 percent share of global smartphone shipments in the fourth quarter, bolstered by a 40 percent jump in the number of handsets delivered.

Apple got only a modest boost in the fourth quarter from the release of its new iPhones, with sales up 6.7 percent compared with a year earlier.

That means its market share slipped to 17.6 percent from 20.9 percent, according to IDC.

The Microsoft Windows Phone platform saw a 46.7 percent year-over-year rise in sales, which pushed its market share to three percent.

BlackBerry saw its woes intensify with sales falling 77 percent from a year earlier and the market share sliding to just 0.6 percent.

Moreover, IDC said most of the sales were older devices using the BlackBerry 7 operating system instead of the newer BB10.

IDC said that with many markets becoming saturated, the landscape will be tougher and more competitive, with vendors looking to cut prices.

"In 2013 we saw the sub-$200 smartphone market grow to 42.6 percent of global volume, or 430 million units," said IDC's Ryan Reith.

For the full year, Android's market share was 78.6 percent to 15.2 percent for Apple's iOS, 3.3 percent for Windows Phone and 1.9 percent for BlackBerry, IDC said.

Apple buys $14 billion of its shares, under pressure from Carl Icahn

Luke OLINGA (AFP)

New York - Under pressure from billionaire Carl Icahn, the U.S. computer company Apple has accelerated the acquisition of its own shares during the last two weeks and no longer excludes acquire large companies.

In an interview with the Wall Street Journal published Thursday on the daily media website of New York business, CEO Tim Cook revealed that the Apple brand had bought $14 billion of its own shares.

The operation was done in two stages: First Apple bought "accelerated" and block 12 billion shares and then it got itself 2 billion market.

It falls within the framework of its program to buy $60 billion of shares over two years announced last year, said the successor to the charismatic Steve Jobs.

In one year, the group is already 40 billion of shares repurchased, according to its leader, who said he was surprised by the drop in titer after the publication of its annual results in late January.

The action of the manufacturer of iPhone and iPad had tumbled 8 % in the wake of its results on fears about its future profitability.

They finished almost unchanged Thursday at $512.51 on Wall Street.

$110 billion share buyback

This announcement comes as the activist investor Carl Icahn asked to increase its share buyback program, an indirect way to remunerate its shareholders and enhance the title.

The billionaire, known for its hostile stock raids and interventionism on the activities of companies in which it invests, has increased in recent days its investment in Apple and now has a 0.9 % stake.

Mr. Icahn intends to ask shareholders at the meeting of the group on February 28, to vote an increase of $50 billion share repurchase program announced, which would represent a total level of $110 billion, almost a quarter of the recovery (457,150,000,000 dollars) Apple on Thursday evening at the New York Stock Exchange.

Its objective is to push the group to be paid to shareholders a portion of its huge war chest estimated at 160 billion dollars.

Without naming Mr. Cook takes his fiery shareholder which he denounced the short-term vision.

The boss of the iPhone maker says it wants "to be able to adapt to long-term interest of shareholders, not to that of a shareholder in the short term, not a day trader."

Large acquisitions for

This strategy could push the Cupertino company to make large acquisitions, breaking with its traditional reluctance.

"We have already looked at large companies," says Cook.

"We have no problem putting a price to 10 digits on the right, it makes sense for Apple's long-term development," he says, noting that Apple has bought 21 companies in the last fifteen months.

While speculations are rife about the highly anticipated release this year of new product categories successor to the iPhone, including a watch, a salon product related to the television or service payments, Mr. Cook was vague.

"We work on good products," he said simply.

During the first quarter of fiscal offset (October-December), Apple had elapsed than 51 million iPhone, a device that alone represents more than half of its sales, while analysts expected 55 million units after the launch in late September with two new models, the 5S and 5C.

Google tries to delete UK court case over iPhone 'tracking’

Google tries to delete UK court case over iPhone 'tracking’

Search giant accused of "arrogant, immoral" behaviour as it attempts to throw out damages lawsuit

Google will today attempt to dismiss a case brought by a group of British internet users who allege the search giant collected personal data against their will.

The company, which has been fined tens of millions of dollars by regulators over the issue in the US, is accused of tracking the habits of iPhone web browsers, even when they had opted out.

One plaintiff accused Google of “arrogant, immoral” behaviour in trying to get the case shut down in England, and lawyers claim it wants to move the lawsuit to the US.

Google says that the plaintiffs suffered no actual harm when they were mistakenly tracked.

Olswang, the law firm, is bringing the case against Google.

It says the company illegally installed internet tracking software, known as cookies, on users’ iPhones during 2011 and 2012.

Three test cases will be highlighted tomorrow, but Olswang says hundreds more have expressed their interest after a social media campaign.

According to the plaintiffs, Google has argued that the claim should be brought in the US, where the company is based.

One claimant, Judith Vidal-Hall, said: “Google’s preference that British consumers should travel all the way to California to seek redress for its wrongdoings is arrogant, immoral and a disgrace.”

A spokesman for Google pointed to a similar US case that was shut down in October.

The judge said that users had not come to any harm even if they were tracked.

“We’re asking the court to re-examine whether this case meets the standards required in the UK for a case like this to go to trial,” the spokesman said.

Google has been fined a total of $39.5m (£24.2m) by two US regulators, one payment of $22.5m levied by the Federal Trade Commission and a recent $17m payment to US states.

Germany summons US envoy amid rage over Merkel spy claims

Germany summons US envoy amid rage over Merkel spy claims

Berlin (AFP)

Germany summoned the US ambassador Thursday amid outrage over suspicions that Washington tapped Chancellor Angela Merkel's mobile phone, as she faced allegations she had naively played down the NSA spying scandal.

Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle will meet US envoy John B. Emerson later Thursday, a foreign ministry spokeswoman told AFP, adding: "The position of the German government will be presented clearly."

The ministry could not confirm that the step was unprecedented in US-German post-war relations but it was seen as a highly unusual move between the close allies.

Merkel was to discuss strategies for confronting covert US surveillance in Europe with French President Francois Hollande on Thursday on the margins of an EU summit, a French diplomatic source said.

The German leader called US President Barack Obama Wednesday demanding answers after learning the National Security Agency may have monitored her phone, warning this would be "breach of trust" between international partners.

A White House spokesman said it is not now listening in on Merkel, but did not deny the possibility her communications may have been intercepted in the past.

The allegations sparked anger in Germany and Merkel's spokesman Steffen Seibert said in a statement that she had "made clear that she unequivocally disapproves of such practices, should they be confirmed, and regards them as completely unacceptable".

Berlin daily Der Tagesspiegel, citing government sources, reported that the alleged tapping targeted not Merkel's official mobile phone but a separate device she uses for conducting business for her Christian Democratic Union party.

German and US intelligence agencies cooperate closely on counter-terrorism efforts and other matters related to espionage.

But the latest revelations threaten the personal trust and close cooperation between Obama and Merkel, which saw the US leader pay a long-awaited visit to Berlin earlier this year.

As the NSA scandal raged in Germany during the campaign for the September election, Obama indicated in July that his personal ties with Merkel meant he had no need to spy on her.

"If I want to know what Chancellor Merkel is thinking, I will call Chancellor Merkel," he said then.

Merkel grew up in communist East Germany, where state spying on citizens was rampant.

Germans also carry the trauma of mass abuses by the security services under the Nazi regime.

'Diplomatic bomb'

News of the eavesdropping suspicion and the German protest came first from Spiegel Online, whose parent magazine reported many of the US surveillance claims made by fugitive intelligence contractor Edward Snowden.

The conservative daily Die Welt called the alleged snooping a "diplomatic bomb" and "a punch in the face of German security agencies", while a Sueddeutsche Zeitung headline labelled it "the worst imaginable insult".

"If it is true what we are hearing then it would be very bad indeed," Defence Minister Thomas de Maiziere told ARD public television.

"The Americans are and remain our best friends but that is not on," he said.

"I have assumed for years that my mobile phone is being tapped but I didn't suspect the Americans."

However the opposition Greens party attacked Merkel's government itself for having declared the NSA spying scandal -- centred on charges of surveillance of millions of citizens' phone calls, emails, chats and other communications -- effectively over several months ago.

"It's scandalous that the government appeased and obscured throughout the entire NSA affair, but that now, when it comes to confidentiality of communications of the chancellor, Merkel voices personal indignation in a phone call to the American president," Greens lawmaker Konstantin von Notz told the Handelsblatt daily's website.

"It apparently had to come to this, the chancellor's mobile phone becoming a target," Die Welt said.

"Now we're seeing the protest that was missing when the population was being spied on."

Merkel had offered assurances during her campaign for a third term -- which she handily won last month -- that she had taken up the most serious allegations of mass NSA spying with Washington and was confident she would receive a thorough answer.

The Social Democrats, her chief rivals, were unable to harness public anger over the snooping reports in the election and are now in negotiations to become Merkel's junior partner in her next administration.

Electric show of technical innovation in Berlin.

Electric show of technical innovation in Berlin.

The IFA in Berlin is one of the world’s leading consumer electronics fairs.

The expo attracts 1,500 exhibitors from across the globe to showcase the latest gadgets and product upgrades.

Around 250,000 visitors turned up for the 53rd edition to view the latest developments in HD TV, tablets and cameras along with new generation smartphones, refrigerators and coffee machines.

Euronews’ Claudio Rocco cast his eye over the exhibits: “Spider-man, cat woman and Batman. This year the superheroes meet the super products.”

In the world of smartphones, Sony showcased the Xperia Z1.

This is the new flagship Android devise, which eclipses the Xperia Z released in March this year.

Like many other smartphone upgrades the concentration is on camera quality.

The Xperia Z1 is water and dustproof.

Competition between tablet manufacturers is intense.

In Berlin the trend is for big devises.

Panasonic have launched, what it claims is the first large tablet with 4K resolution.

This is not something for the kids, but more aimed at the professional market it displays crystal-clear resolution and comes in a rugged carbon-fiber case.

Wacom presented another large tablet called the Wacom Cintiq Companion Hybrid that offers professionals the chance to stay productive while on the move, but it is also a standard tablet.

Hybrid is buzz world at the IFA, but what does it mean?

Jens Kellerman is head of PR for Wacom: “Well first of all, hybrid means two in one. So we have one device to realise two different kinds of operations. In this situation you have the professional use and it is plugged in to the Mac or the PC station. If you just unplug it you have a media tablet running on an Android jelly bean operating system.”

Making a splash this year, waterproof phones, with many demonstrations of just how deep and how long the phones can stay underwater, quite handy if you fancy a submerged chit-chat.

US NSA and UK GCHQ 'can spy on smartphones'

US NSA and UK GCHQ 'can spy on smartphones'

[caption id="attachment_8443" align="alignnone" width="304"]_69718077_019113952-1 (Apple's iPhone privacy protection codes are reported to have been compromised (BBC (AFP))[/caption]

The US National Security Agency (NSA) is reported have cracked the security codes which protect data on iPhones, Blackberries and Android devices.

German news weekly Der Spiegel says documents suggest the NSA and the British GCHQ made joint efforts to gather intelligence.

Teams looked at each phone to crack its privacy codes, Der Spiegel said.

Saturday saw thousands of demonstrators in Berlin demand that the NSA stop monitoring internet users.

Codes unlocked

The documents Spiegel has seen do not show whether or not there has been mass surveillance of phone use.

Once the intelligence teams had unlocked the codes, agencies could read a user's contacts and lists of who had been called.

The BBC's Steve Evans in Berlin says the reports do seem to indicate that the British and American security agencies have the ability to read private communications beyond what might have previously been thought possible - or desirable by those who fear the intrusion of the state.

The magazine did not explain how it had obtained the documents.

But one of the authors of the article, Laura Poitras, is an American filmmaker with close contacts to the NSA whistle-blower Edward Snowden.

'Champagne'

According to the documents seen by Der Spiegel, the Canadian manufacturer of Blackberry phones began using a new method to compress the data in May 2009.

Intelligence agents were unable to access some information on BlackBerry phones for about a year afterwards, the Associated Press news agency said.

Der Spiegel's article said that GCHQ then cracked the problem, too - and analysts celebrated their achievement with the word "Champagne".

A stream of recent revelations about international data surveillance has ignited a heated debate in Germany about the country's co-operation with the United States in intelligence matters.

The iPhone in the middle of an Apple event scheduled 10 September

(AFP)

Washington - The computer giant Apple announced Tuesday the organization of an event on 10 September where they could unveil a new range of its iPhone, including a cheap model for emerging countries.

The Apple brand has kept the mystery, saying only in its invitation that the event would take place at its headquarters in California (west) and should "brighten the day of everyone."

According to persistent rumors, Apple intends to unveil an updated version of its iPhone 5 and announce the release of a model "low cost" of its smartphone in order to compete.

Dotted with small colored dots, Apple's invitation also suggests that the brand could expand the range of colors of its flagship phone.

Mid-August, the Wall Street Journal claimed that Apple had asked its Taiwanese supplier Foxconn to start delivering them early September two new iPhone models, including a high-end and entry-level.

The launch of a cheap model mark a break for the Apple brand.

If the iPhone is still a cash cow for Apple, its share of the global smartphone market is eroding face competition from cheaper models operating with Android, Google's operating software.
