Exports give German economy boost in Q4

Exports give German economy boost in Q4

Frankfurt (AFP)

Growth of the German economy, Europe's biggest, picked up fractionally at the end of last year, propelled by buoyant exports, official data showed on Friday.

German gross domestic product (GDP) grew by 0.4 percent in the period from October to December, slightly faster than analysts' expectations and also up from growth of 0.3 percent in the preceding three months, the federal statistics office Destatis said.

"Positive impulses came primarily from net foreign trade," Destatis explained.

"According to preliminary calculations, exports grew much more strongly than imports. By contrast, the signals from domestic demand were more mixed," the statisticians said.

Public spending stagnated and consumer spending was down slightly, but positive developments were seen in investment.

Investment in both construction and equipment was up strongly, but companies also sharply reduced their stockpiles "and that put the brakes on growth," Destatis said.

Taking 2013 as a whole, Destatis confirmed a preliminary estimate from last month which showed that German growth slowed to just 0.4 percent last year, the slowest growth for four years.

Pissarro and Picasso records broken at London auction

Pissarro and Picasso records broken at London auction

London (AFP)

A Paris street scene painted by Camille Pissarro sold for £19.9 million ($32.1 million, 24 million euros) at a London sale on Wednesday, almost five times the previous record for the Impressionist master at auction.

The Danish-French painter's "Boulevard Montmartre, Matinee de Printemps", widely considered to be one of the most important Impressionist works to come up for sale in the last decade, went under the hammer at London's Sotheby's auction house.

The 1897 painting, an elevated view of a typical spring scene on the famous Paris thoroughfare, was originally owned by Jewish industrialist Max Silberberg, who was based in Breslau.

The painting was restituted to his family in 2000.

"It is an honour to be entrusted with offering the greatest work by Camille Pissarro ever to appear at auction –- a work that encompasses such a richly painted canvas and a supremely elegant composition," said Helena Newman, Chairman of Sotheby's Impressionist & Modern Art Department Europe, prior to the sale.

"The appeal of these extremely desirable attributes to discerning collectors is enhanced by the painting's history of having been housed in a collection as important as Max Silberberg's," she added.

The auction also saw the highest price for a Vincent Van Gogh painting at auction in the British capital for 25 years when a bidder fought of competition from six rivals to secure "L'Homme est en mer" for £16.9 million.

The work features a woman cradling a baby as she sits next to a fire.

Record prices were also achieved for a print by Cubist master Picasso and for a work on paper by Swiss sculptor, painter and draughtsman Alberto Giacometti.

Two weeks of London auctions kicked off on Tuesday, when paintings by Picasso, Rene Magritte and Juan Gris pushed a sale at Christie's to a record for London of nearly £177 million.

Gris's still-life "Nature Morte a la Nappe a Carreaux" ("The Checked Tablecloth") led the way, selling for £34.8 million to smash the world auction record for the Spanish artist.

France and Germany rebuild ties but EU waits for old axis

logo

France and Germany rebuild ties but EU waits for old axis

Brussels (AFP)

With France and Germany apparently patching up their economic differences, their decades-old axis could retake its place at the heart of Europe, but analysts are waiting for actions to back up the rhetoric.

French President Francois Hollande's recent promises of economic reform have been welcomed by Chancellor Angela Merkel's coalition as a step away from socialist policies towards Berlin's austerity-minded approach.

The eurozone's two biggest economies have meanwhile launched a series of measures to jumpstart stalled ties after the financial crisis exposed major differences in approach to budgetary discipline and growth.

"There is a chance this is a real one (rapprochement)," Janis Emmanouilidis of the Brussels-based European Policy Centre think tank told AFP.

"Each side knows that they have to interact with each other for many years to come."

Paris and Berlin have struggled to reconcile their policies on recovering from the eurozone debt crisis ever since Hollande took office in 2012 promising to spend France's way out of trouble.

The previously strong bond between Merkel and Hollande's centre-right predecessor Nicolas Sarkozy -- dubbed "Merkozy" -- has been replaced by a lack of communication, exacerbated in 2013 by Merkel spending months building a new left-right coalition after elections.

But earlier this month Berlin warmly welcomed what Hollande called "social democratic" reforms to spur the beleaguered French economy.

They included 50 billion euros ($68 billion) in public spending cuts and a 30-billion-euro reduction in corporate payroll charges.

Since then it has been a veritable love-in between the former foes.

Germany offered logistical support to the French operation in the Central African Republic, while their foreign ministers are considering joint trips to some of Europe's troubled neighbours.

'Franco-German phoenix'

"It's a social-democratic convergence which reconciles supply-side reforms with a reduction in social inequality," said Claire Demesmay, of the German Council on International Relations.

Emmanouilidis said there was time for Germany and France to find common ground on changing the EU's treaties to strengthen joint economic governance in the 28-nation bloc.

But the negotiations would be "complex" and there were also a host of differences on technical issues such as banking union, the financial transactions tax and others.

The two leaders also face different situations at home.

The main problems in France are youth unemployment, competitiveness and the bloated state, whereas Germany faces issues with internal consumer demand.

Others were more sceptical that the relationship between France and Germany could return to the heady days when they effectively built the European Union together.

"I'm not sure how much rapprochement there actually is between France and Germany," Mats Persson, director of Open Europe, a eurosceptic think-tank based in London, told AFP.

"One senior German told me recently that they are far more worried about France than about Italy."

One EU official was cautious.

"The rebirth of the Franco-German phoenix is a recurrent phenomenon," the source added on condition of anonymity.

"For citizens, words have to be translated into lasting actions."

But Persson said the relationship was still "relevant and important for Europe."

"In the grand scheme of things it is good that France and Germany get on," he said.

Britain and other northern European countries could in particular benefit from the alliance, despite appearances to the contrary.

Prime Minister David Cameron has been wooing Germany in a bid to win support for his quest to renegotiate Britain's relationship with the EU before putting the new terms to a national referendum in 2017.

But close ties between Merkel and Hollande would not necessarily scupper this, particularly as there is appetite for treaty change from Berlin.

"A Franco-German axis on the whole is more open to reform than the sum of its parts," Persson said.

"It could therefore be more sympathetic to the UK's reform agenda."

Ford earnings rise, beat expectations

logo

Ford earnings rise, beat expectations

New York (AFP)

US auto giant Ford Motor Tuesday reported quarterly earnings that bested expectations as higher sales in North America and a smaller loss in Europe offset declines in South America.

Ford, the second-biggest US automaker, notched a 90 percent rise in fourth-quarter earnings thanks largely to a number of tax gains.

Revenues rose 3.6 percent compared with the year-ago period.

"We had an outstanding year in 2013, demonstrating that our One Ford plan continues to drive solid results and profitable growth for all," Ford chief executive Alan Mulally said in a statement.

Ford's North America division, which accounts for nearly one-third of company sales, reported higher quarterly sales but nine percent lower profits due to lower prices and $300 million in expenses associated with a recall of its Escape sport utility vehicle.

Ford enjoyed higher sales and wholesale deliveries in its Asia Pacific Africa segment, where pre-tax profit hit a record $106 million, about three times more than in the year-ago period.

In Europe, Ford trimmed its quarterly loss to $571 million from $732 million in the year-ago period, while Ford's South America division posted a loss of $126 million.

The South America results were hit by lower production in Venezuela due to a limited availability of US dollars, the company said.

Overall fourth-quarter profit came in at $3.0 billion on revenue of $37.6 billion compared with year-ago profit of $1.6 billion on revenue of $37.6 billion.

The results included $2.1 billion in favorable tax items, such as valuation allowances held against US tax-deferred assets.

The results translated into earnings of 31 cents per share, topping analyst expectations of 28 cents.

The company rated 2013 "one of Ford's best years ever" as Ford and other US automakers benefited from a surge in auto sales.

Net income for the year was $7.2 billion on revenue of $146.9 billion, up 26.3 percent from 2012 profit of $5.7 billion on revenue of $133.6 billion.

Ford said its 2014 outlook was unchanged with total company pre-tax profit expected to range from $7 billion to $8 billion.

Ford shares were up 2.1 percent at $16.04 in pre-market trade.

Hungary claims to have been the victim of NSA tracks

(AFP)

Budapest - Hungary said Thursday they was the victim of tracks the United States and threatened with possible "profound" changes in its relations with Washington.

"It is clear that  the United States intelligence has information on Hungary," he told the press secretary of state, Janos Lazar.

"The scandal of the United States tracks could profoundly change the nature of relations between Hungary and  the United States," said Lazar, head of the cabinet of Prime Minister Viktor Orban.

Hungarian Foreign Minister Janos Martonyi said on his part that he hoped "to restore the level of trust" between Hungary and  the United States, two countries "allies" and "friends".

Both officials were speaking after a meeting of the committee set up to study the possible activities in Hungary of  the United States National Security Agency (NSA), responsible for intercepting communications.

The commission, whose proceedings are confidential, was established in December, after which came to light of the revelations of the NSA exagente Edward Snowden.

The next  the United States ambassador to Budapest, Colleen Bell, has been called to testify before the commission.

The spy program of the NSA and the protests that triggered disclosure in Europe will be discussed at the 50th Security Conference in Munich, who meet later this week in southern Germany to the leading names of the defense and diplomacy.

Drinks giant SABMiller toasts rising Q3 sales

Drinks giant SABMiller toasts rising Q3 sales

London (AFP)

British drinks firm SABMiller reported rising sales in the third quarter of its financial year as business in emerging markets offset a poor performance in Europe, in a statement released Tuesday.

Sales grew by four percent in the three months to the end of December, compared with the outcome in the same period of the previous fiscal year, said a trading update from the maker of Grolsch and Peroni Nastro Azzuro beers.

In Latin America and Africa, sales rose by five percent and eight percent respectively.

Revenues grew six percent in Asia Pacific and by seven percent in South Africa.

However, North American revenues added just one percent, while Europe posted a six percent decline on the back of challenging market conditions.

"Growth in the third quarter was driven by our emerging market businesses where we are successfully targeting new consumers ... across our brand portfolios," said chief executive Alan Clark in the statement.

Total beverage volumes meanwhile grew two percent in the reporting period, with lager volumes rising one percent and soft drinks volumes gaining seven percent.

SABMiller, which is listed in London and Johannesburg, produces well-known beer brands including Foster's, Grolsch, Miller Lite, Peroni Nastro Azzuro and Pilsner Urquell.

The group had announced in December that its chairman and former chief executive Graham Mackay had died following an illness.

South African national Mackay, 64, had stepped down as chief executive last April after undergoing surgery for a brain tumour.

IMF upgrades global growth forecast for 2014

IMF upgrades global growth forecast for 2014

Washington (AFP)

The International Monetary Fund said Tuesday that the global economic recovery is strengthening as countries move away from austerity budgets and financial systems improve.

The Fund increased its estimate for world growth this year slightly to 3.7 percent, after 3.0 percent in 2013, while warning that the rebound of the world economy is still "weak and uneven."

It was the first time in nearly two years that the Fund revised its growth forecasts upward: rougher conditions than expected have forced repeated downgrades of its predictions.

"The basic reason behind the stronger recovery is that the brakes to the recovery are progressively being loosened," said IMF chief economist Olivier Blanchard, in the Fund's newest assessment of the global economy.

"The drag from fiscal consolidation is diminishing. The financial system is slowly healing. Uncertainty is decreasing," he said.

However, he added, there are significant differences between the United States, where growth looks "increasingly solid", and Europe, where growth remains weak and even weaker in the countries of the eurozone's southern rim.

India's Infosys Q3 profit up 21.4%, raises sales outlook

Mumbai (AFP)

Indian outsourcing giant Infosys reported Friday a better-than-expected 21.4 percent jump in quarterly net profit, led by improved demand from Europe and the United States.

The company also hiked its full-year revenue outlook, driving up its shares by around two percent.

Consolidated net profit for the Nasdaq-listed firm climbed to 28.75 billion rupees ($463 million) in the October-to-December quarter from 23.69 billion rupees in the same period a year earlier.

Analysts had expected Infosys to report a net profit of 27 billion rupees.

Revenues jumped 25 percent to 130.26 billion rupees in the third financial quarter from 104.24 billion rupees in the year-ago period.

The company's results kicked off India's quarterly earnings season.

It forecast revenues would increase by 11.5 to 12 percent in dollar terms for the fiscal year to March 2014 -- a notch above its earlier outlook of 9.0-10.0 percent growth.

"The year ahead looks exciting for the IT services industry. We believe the global economic environment has improved and our clients are gaining confidence to invest in their strategic initiatives," said Infosys's chief executive S.D. Shibulal.

Bangalore-based Infosys been undergoing major changes with a string of departures by some of its senior staff since co-founder and business icon N.R. Narayana Murthy returned in a bid to reboot the company's fortunes last June.

Infosys -- created three decades ago by Murthy and six others as they sat around a kitchen table -- has been losing market share to rivals such as Tata Consultancy Services and HCL.

Last October, Infosys said it would pay $34 million to the US government to settle an investigation into alleged visa fraud by the company.

Many of India's IT outsourcing firms have reported subdued growth in recent years due to a sharp global economic slowdown.

German consumer confidence rises at year-end: survey

logo

German consumer confidence rises at year-end: survey

Frankfurt (AFP)

Consumer confidence in Germany rose again during the busy Christmas period, auguring well for Europe's top economy as it goes into 2014, a new poll found on Friday.

"Consumer sentiment is very good at the end of 2013," market research company GfK said in a statement.

"Economic expectations and willingness to spend are continuing to rise. Income expectations have slipped, but are still at very high levels."

Overall, GfK's headline household confidence index was forecast to rise to 7.6 points in January from 7.4 points in December.

This reading is based on responses from about 2,000 households regarding their expectations about pay and the economy as a whole in the coming months, as well as their willingness to spend money.

Sentiment in Europe's top economy is currently very positive.

Earlier this week, the ZEW investor confidence index rose to its highest level in seven and a half years, and the Ifo business climate index hit a 21-month high.

Analysts nevertheless questioned whether consumer confidence would translate into higher retail sales.

"German consumers are becoming more confident as uncertainty fades. The GfK index is at its highest level since 2007," said Berenberg Bank economist Christian Schulz.

"Consumer confidence has been rising strongly since April 2013. However, strong consumer confidence has so far failed to translate into stronger hard consumption data," the expert said.

Retail sales had mostly disappointed and the consumption component of gross domestic product had only grown modestly so far in 2013, Schulz said.

Nevertheless, "with the economy turning up and the anticipation of a new national minimum wage of 8.50 euros introduced in 2015, we continue to expect German consumers to make a healthy positive contribution to GDP growth in 2014 and beyond," Schulz concluded.

Slovaks gamble for a good cause with receipt lottery

Slovaks gamble for a good cause with receipt lottery

[caption id="attachment_10521" align="alignnone" width="400"]ALeqM5geqiW9uZ5DdlKrkTo0KTCXZ9bm_A (A woman holds store receipts doubling as lottery tickets on November 29, 2013 in Bratislava (AFP, Samuel Kubani))[/caption]

(By Tatiana Jancarikova (AFP))

Bratislava — Slovak electrician Michal is not the gambling type, but twice a month he holds his breath during a lottery draw in the hopes of winning thousands of euros or a new car.

The 34-year-old is betting on getting lucky in Slovakia's receipt lottery, a new government measure in which all store receipts double as lottery tickets.

The scheme -- a bid to fight tax evasion by vendors -- has taught thrifty Slovaks to gamble for a good cause and has proven to be both a hit and a cash cow for the government.

"I don't spend money on gambling but why wouldn't I take part in this lottery?" Michal told AFP at a grocery store in downtown Bratislava, the capital.

"You don't have to buy tickets, you just register online the serial numbers of receipts you would otherwise dump or leave at the store."

He has spent hours registering around 90 receipts -- which can be done via a special mobile application or at a betting shop -- and driving his girlfriend crazy.

"All of a sudden, I'm finding old receipts all over our flat, it's a mess!" said Nina, who does not share her boyfriend's latest passion.

Tax evasion is a constant worry for the leftist government of Prime Minister Robert Fico as it struggles to cut its budget deficit to under the EU ceiling of three percent of gross domestic product.

"We launched the lottery to nudge people to request a receipt for every purchase because every time vendors sell their goods without a receipt, they essentially avoid paying the VAT" sales tax, Finance Minister Peter Kazimir told AFP.

The eurozone member has two value-added-tax rates: a 10-percent rate applies to books and medicine, while a 20-percent rate applies to everything else.

The Slovak government loses around 150 million euros ($204 million), or 3.5 percent of annual revenue, in VAT each year due to the grey economy, the finance ministry estimates.

But the lottery, which launched in September, is going a long way towards plugging the hole.

'500,000 extra tax inspectors'

"We are seeing more customers insist upon a receipt," Maria Belanova, sales manager at the Fresh Labas grocery chain where the first lottery winner shopped, told AFP.

Shoppers have registered nearly 30 million receipts since the launch, or five and half times the Slovak population of 5.4 million people, thanks to the promise of free money.

Each month 10 lucky shoppers -- whose identities are kept secret by the lottery operator -- win cash prizes of up to 10,000 euros, while another eight score a new car.

Taiwan and Malta also have similar lotteries, while Georgia launched one last year but cancelled it after seven months due to poor impact on national revenue.

Slovakia has fared better.

"In September and October the state has collected an extra 130 million euros in VAT, which will help us meet this year's budget goal," Kazimir said.

So far tax collectors have also received more than 3,000 reports from people who did not receive a receipt from a vendor or whose receipts were rejected as fake by the lottery system.

Officials have inspected hundreds of businesses and even closed one restaurant and two stores run by a European discount apparel chain that had been using fake cash registers.

"Slovakia has found almost 500,000 extra tax inspectors in those who joined the lottery," Kazimir said wryly.

Slovakia has been a member of the European Union since 2004 and the eurozone since 2009.

Its economy -- driven by exports of cars and electronics to Europe, mostly Germany -- is expected to slow to 0.8 percent growth this year from two-percent in 2012.

"So far we are observing the early enthusiasm for the lottery. We will be able to quantify its effects in six months or a year after its launch," Viliam Palenik, an economist at the Slovak Academy of Sciences, told AFP.

"The key effect is that vendors will be more cautious and less prone to cheating not knowing which customer will report them to the tax authorities, while people will realise that paying taxes is normal."

Emmanuel Hoog: "The AFP wants to become the world's leading sports information”

INTERVIEW - In his second term, President and CEO of AFP, co-founder of the Forum d'Avignon, wants to strengthen the development of video and sales abroad.

CEO of the AFP began his second term as head of the news agency. Despite the pressure on prices, the AFP is profitable and wants to enjoy a rich sporting events in 2014 to take a step ahead.

LE FIGARO. -  You begin your second term as head of the AFP. How did you reform this institution?

Emmanuel HOOG. - The AFP is sitting on a very solid foundation, but I focused on the development of video and sales abroad. Today, the International represents 55 % of our commercial business against 50 % when I arrived. We distribute 200 videos per day, in all languages. This volume has tripled in four years. It is through the video we can win new contracts abroad in South America, Europe and Asia.

AFP presents its new range of sports for the Olympics in Sochi and the World Cup in Brazil. Are you going to integrate Twitter?

Sport is an area of excellence AFP because we follow the football, a sport with international influence, better than our U.S. competitors Associated Press and Reuters. Sport already represents 25 to 35 % of our offer but 12% of our revenue because we do not yet sell sport as a dedicated wire except in some foreign countries. Our major project is to market now sports theme in the broadest sense (result, economics, social and people) as a standalone thread and across applications. AFP wants to become the world's leading news agencies in the field of sport. The news agency of the future must remain both general and also have an area of excellence, as Reuters is the economy. Us is sport.

Twitter is a competitor?

No. Twitter is a major player in the information economy. But Twitter creates noise and uncertainty. Our job is to verify the information. Compare Twitter to a newsfeed does not make sense ! Our headlines are more than 140 characters and are not limited to the facts but put them back in context and give explanations. We are a news agency, a news agency in the Anglo- Saxon sense, we exist for over 180 years and we have experienced many changes as the emergence of radio, television, the Internet and maintaining social networks. We need to develop links with Twitter but we are a major player in the information.

AFP focuses on video. Will you create YouTube channel?

"It is more profitable to attack the market for televisions and Internet videos with that directly to YouTube channel."

Emmanuel Hoog

Our videos are already on YouTube, but we will not create a chain because there is a problem of monetization. It is more profitable to attack the market for televisions and Internet videos with that directly to YouTube channel.

Posed television and the Internet in your business?

Television and Internet sites represent nearly 30 % of our commercial business. But, like other customers, they are still primarily customers text and photo. Video this year represent 6 % of our revenues against 0.3 % a decade and less than 1 % in 2006. For our competitor AP, it already represents 25 %, so we will continue to grow in this area.

Your clients media accuse you to compete in the consumer market.

I 've always said that the AFP should be present on the Internet. We have completely redesigned our website and developed apps afp.com public abroad. Internet is important to develop our brand abroad and thus to gain market share.

AFP is difficult to manage socially. How is the current climate?

We are a company of fixed costs due to price deflation contracts and economic conditions we must adapt our costs, while keeping intact our forces editorial production. We started a social negotiation to see how to adapt the AFP 's strategic and competitive challenges.

AFP is profitable?

Yes, we derive a margin of 5 % on a turnover of 290 million euros, we must increase to meet the necessary technology investments forty million over five years. And when I see our competitors dismiss or face large deficits, we must be vigilant to keep this profitability.

Brussels has opened an investigation accusing you receive state aid. What is the result?

We are in the final straight. Brussels would soon enact measures that the French state should take. Today, the government pays a grant in the form of subscriptions over the AFP of 120 million euros per year. We demonstrated that the mission of the AFP is a mission of general interest. The European Commission should approve the method of calculating the cost of the mission of general interest, the State also remaining client AFP. This clarification will help sustain and secure our funding.

The State Will it reduce subscriptions in 2014?

The draft budget law provides to the contrary, a slight increase of € 123 million.

Your name runs for the presidency of Radio France and France Televisions. Are you a candidate?

I am committed to 4000 % AFP. If my name around, it falls within the scope of the rumor while I am in the field of information.

With falling prices, a billion smartphones sold this year

Washington - Smartphones have crossed the symbolic threshold of one billion units sold this year worldwide, thanks to lower prices and sales should continue to believe in the coming years, says a study released Tuesday.

The number of smartphones sold this year jumped 39.3% compared to 2012, a rate that is expected to moderate in the following years, says research firm International Data Corporation (IDC).

A key factor in the popularity of the multi-function phones is their price, which fell 12% in one year, according to IDC.

The average price of a smartphone hit $ 337 this year, down 12% compared to 2012, and could decrease to $ 265 by 2017.

"The driver of smartphone sales in the coming years should be lower prices," said an analyst at IDC, Ramon Llamas.

"In emerging markets in particular, where the sensitivity and price elasticity are so important, the price will decrease for smartphones, which are no longer only in the hands of urban elites but also between those consumer mass markets", says Llamas.

"Each vendor looks almost how it can lower the price of equipment for both a profit and provide a solid smartphone experience," he says.

Smartphone sales could represent 1.7 billion units by 2017, with a growth rate of 18.4 % next year, according to IDC.

"There was just a few years, the sector (smartphones) spoke of the next billion people going to connect, and it was assumed that the majority of these people would do with their mobile phone. Given the trajectory of (price), smartphones are now a very realistic to connect billions of users option”, says Llamas.

The number of units sold increased particularly in the Asia-Pacific and Latin America, each providing a higher number of units sold of approximately 23 % over the next four years.

North America, which already has a large number of smartphones should see growth in the number of units sold at a slow pace of 7.8% and in Europe 11.1%.

UK 'needs EU law opt out'

The Government needs to negotiate an “opt out” of European legislation to protect the national interest in recognition of its “declining influence” in Brussels.

[caption id="attachment_9033" align="alignnone" width="620"]marrshow_2686781b (The Prime Minister has pledged to reneogtiate Britain's EU treaty (Photo: REUTERS))[/caption]

Business for Britain said the UK must be able to reject European Union laws unilaterally because the country has become increasingly isolated on issues such as financial services. Currently, policy can only be vetoed if several countries oppose it.

“Britain’s declining influence in the EU institutions has seriously undermined our ability to prevent a huge rise in the number and cost of regulations sent from Brussels,” the lobby group said.

“With the UK Government looking at possible areas of renegotiation, David Cameron [should push] for a red card system for member states.”

The campaign group pointed out that between 1973 and 2013, Britain’s voting power in the Council of Ministers decreased from 17pc to 8pc, and the UK now occupies just 9.5pc of seats in the European Parliament compared with 20pc in 1979.

In the past 40 years, the UK contribution to the EU budget has risen eight-fold from £1.04bn to £8.31bn, in today’s money.

Despite the declining influence and rising costs, Business for Britain pointed out that “around 50pc of UK legislation with a significant economic impact originates from EU legislation”, according to a House of Commons research paper.

Recently, the UK has had to file a legal challenge to Brussels’ proposed financial transaction tax and planned cap on bank bonuses, for fear that the laws would do lasting damage to the UK financial services sector.

Bankers and politicians have interpreted the proposals as a direct attack on the City.

The Prime Minister has promised to push for a treaty renegotiation to reflect the changing dynamics within Europe since the eurozone crisis. On Sunday, he told BBC One’s The Andrew Marr show: “My goal is to renegotiate our relationship with Europe, very radically.”

Matthew Elliott, chief executive of Business for Britain, said: “Britain has recently been left as the sole voice opposing pernicious EU financial regulation and absurd budget increases. This is why it’s more important than ever that the Government is able to get a better deal for Britain, including a veto that will stop bad EU laws holding back growth and jobs in this country.”

Golden Dawn leadership to appear in court on Tuesday

Golden Dawn leadership to appear in court on Tuesday

Senior members of Greek’s Far Right Golden Dawn party are expected to appear in court on Tuesday as Athens seeks to quell growing unrest over the murder of an anti-Fascist activist.

The party’s founder, Nikos Michaloliakos, and four other Golden Dawn MPs have spent the weekend in custody after being arrested on Saturday on charges of belonging to a criminal organisation.

Police said a sixth lawmaker, Christos Papas, a close aide to the party leader, turned himself in to police headquarters in Athens on Sunday.

It follows the fatal stabbing two weeks ago of a Greek rap artist and anti-racism campaigner, Pavlos Fyssas, alleged by a self-confessed neo-Nazi who worked in one of Golden Dawn’s offices.

Mr Fyssas’s death sparked widespread protests across the country, some of which turned violent.

The move against the party’s MPs is intended partly to deflected criticisms that the government has failed to stop violence linked to Golden Dawn, whose followers have been linked to numerous attacks on immigrants.

But it also risks creating a backlash among supporters of the group, which is now Greece’s third largest political party.

It has already threatened to pull its 18 MPs out of parliament in protest at what it sees as a politically-motivated crackdown.

Such a move would force by-elections that could wreck the fragile coalition government cobbled together by Your Prime Minister Antonis Samaras, the prime minister, thereby jeopardising the political backing for Greece’s current financial bail-out deal.

Your prime Minister Samaras is due in Washington on Tuesday for meetings with the International Monetary Fund.

“This is not just a message for internal use, to show that it puts a halt to violence, this is a message directed outwards, to Europe and others,” said Ilias Nikolakopoulos, a political analyst.

Ilias Panayiotaros, a Golden Dawn MP and party spokesman, said before giving himself up on Saturday: “Shame on them, the people will lift Golden Dawn higher.”

Police say they found three pistols, ammunition and thousands of euros in cash at Mr Michaloliakos’s home.

Several police officers thought suspected of links to Golden Dawn were suspended ahead of the arrests to prevent the MPs being tipped off about planned raids on their homes.

A policeman thought to have been working as a bodyguard for the party has also been arrested.

Golden Dawn has issued a rallying call via a text message, saying: “We call upon everyone to support our moral and just struggle against the corrupt system.”
