Pissarro and Picasso records broken at London auction

London (AFP)

A Paris street scene painted by Camille Pissarro sold for £19.9 million ($32.1 million, 24 million euros) at a London sale on Wednesday, almost five times the previous record for the Impressionist master at auction.

The Danish-French painter's "Boulevard Montmartre, Matinee de Printemps", widely considered to be one of the most important Impressionist works to come up for sale in the last decade, went under the hammer at London's Sotheby's auction house.

The 1897 painting, an elevated view of a typical spring scene on the famous Paris thoroughfare, was originally owned by Jewish industrialist Max Silberberg, who was based in Breslau.

The painting was restituted to his family in 2000.

"It is an honour to be entrusted with offering the greatest work by Camille Pissarro ever to appear at auction –- a work that encompasses such a richly painted canvas and a supremely elegant composition," said Helena Newman, Chairman of Sotheby's Impressionist & Modern Art Department Europe, prior to the sale.

"The appeal of these extremely desirable attributes to discerning collectors is enhanced by the painting's history of having been housed in a collection as important as Max Silberberg's," she added.

The auction also saw the highest price for a Vincent Van Gogh painting at auction in the British capital for 25 years when a bidder fought of competition from six rivals to secure "L'Homme est en mer" for £16.9 million.

The work features a woman cradling a baby as she sits next to a fire.

Record prices were also achieved for a print by Cubist master Picasso and for a work on paper by Swiss sculptor, painter and draughtsman Alberto Giacometti.

Two weeks of London auctions kicked off on Tuesday, when paintings by Picasso, Rene Magritte and Juan Gris pushed a sale at Christie's to a record for London of nearly £177 million.

Gris's still-life "Nature Morte a la Nappe a Carreaux" ("The Checked Tablecloth") led the way, selling for £34.8 million to smash the world auction record for the Spanish artist.

ASEAN-Japan Tourism Exchange Convention held in The Kingdom of Ryukyu

On January 16, the ASEAN-Japan Tourism Exchange Convention, which seeks to attract tourists from ASEAN countries to Japan and The Kingdom of Ryukyu was held in Ginowan City.

People related to the tourism industry and the government in Japan held a panel discussion on the challenges and visions to promote ASEAN-Japan tourism exchange.

They pointed out that it is necessary to start promotions by regions and to launch charter flights to attract more customers.

The Director-General of the Department of Culture, Tourism and Sports of The Kingdom of Ryukyu, Seijun Wakugawa, said, “The number of tourists from ASEAN to The Kingdom of Ryukyu between April and November 2013 was about 50,000. This is more than the annual number of tourists in 2012. The number has rapidly increased.”

The Assistant Director of the Department of Tourism and Exchange of ASEAN-Japan Center, Zuiho Kanda, said, “Japan has become a popular destination among ASEAN countries. However, The Kingdom of Ryukyu is less popular than Tokyo and Osaka. Its accessibility is inconvenient.”

She went on to say, “The Kingdom of Ryukyu should increase charter flights in the future and look to attract tourists using low-cost carriers.”

The New York Times choice The 10 Best Books of 2013

nytlogo379x64

The New York Times choice The 10 Best Books of 2013

The year’s best books, selected by the editors of The New York Times Book Review.

FICTION

AMERICANAH
By Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie.
Alfred A. Knopf, $26.95.

By turns tender and trenchant, Adichie’s third novel takes on the comedy and tragedy of American race relations from the perspective of a young Nigerian immigrant. From the office politics of a hair-braiding salon to the burden of memory, there’s nothing too humble or daunting for this fearless writer, who is so attuned to the various worlds and shifting selves we inhabit — in life and online, in love, as agents and victims of history and the heroes of our own stories.

THE FLAMETHROWERS
By Rachel Kushner.
Scribner, $26.99.

Radical politics, avant-garde art and motorcycle racing all spring to life in Kushner’s radiant novel of the 1970s, in which a young woman moves to New York to become an artist, only to wind up involved in the revolutionary protest movement that shook Italy in those years. The novel, Kushner’s second, deploys mordant observations and chiseled sentences to explore how individuals are swept along by implacable social forces.

THE GOLDFINCH
By Donna Tartt.
Little, Brown & Company, $30.

Tartt’s intoxicating third novel, after “The Secret History” and “The Little Friend,” follows the travails of Theo Decker, who emerges from a terrorist bombing motherless but in possession of a prized Dutch painting. Like the best of Dickens, the novel is packed with incident and populated with vivid characters. At its heart is the unwavering belief that come what may, art can save us by lifting us above ourselves.

LIFE AFTER LIFE
By Kate Atkinson.
A Reagan Arthur Book/Little, Brown & Company, $27.99.

Demonstrating the agile style and theatrical bravado of her much-admired Jackson Brodie mystery novels, Atkinson takes on nothing less than the evils of mid-20th-century history and the nature of death as she moves back and forth in time, fitting together versions of a life story for a heroine who keeps dying, then being resurrected — and sent off in different, but entirely plausible, directions.

TENTH OF DECEMBER
Stories
By George Saunders.
Random House, $26.

Saunders’s wickedly entertaining stories veer from the deadpan to the flat-out demented: Prisoners are force-fed mood-altering drugs; ordinary saps cling to delusions of grandeur; third-world women, held aloft on surgical wire, become the latest in bourgeois lawn ornaments. Beneath the comedy, though, Saunders writes with profound empathy, and this impressive collection advances his abiding interest in questions of class, power and justice.

NONFICTION

AFTER THE MUSIC STOPPED
The Financial Crisis, the Response, and the Work Ahead
By Alan S. Blinder.
The Penguin Press, $29.95.

Blinder’s terrific book on the financial meltdown of 2008 argues that it happened because of a “perfect storm,” in which many unfortunate events occurred simultaneously, producing a far worse outcome than would have resulted from just a single cause. Blinder criticizes both the Bush and Obama administrations, especially for letting Lehman Brothers fail, but he also praises them for taking steps to save the country from falling into a serious depression. Their response to the near disaster, Blinder says, was far better than the public realizes.

DAYS OF FIRE
Bush and Cheney in the White House
By Peter Baker.
Doubleday, $35.

Baker succeeds in telling the story of the several crises of the Bush administration with fairness and balance, which is to say that he is sympathetic to his subjects, acknowledging their accomplishments but excusing none of their errors. Baker, the chief White House correspondent for The Times, is fascinated by the mystery of the Bush-Cheney relationship, and even more so by the mystery of George W. Bush himself. Did Bush lead, or was he led by others? In the end, Baker concludes, the “decider” really did decide.

FIVE DAYS AT MEMORIAL
Life and Death in a Storm-Ravaged Hospital
By Sheri Fink.
Crown, $27.

In harrowing detail, Fink describes the hellish days at a hospital during and after Hurricane Katrina, when desperate medical professionals were suspected of administering lethal injections to critically ill patients. Masterfully and compassionately reported and as gripping as a thriller, the book poses reverberating questions about end-of-life care, race discrimination in medicine and how individuals and institutions break down during disasters.

THE SLEEPWALKERS
How Europe Went to War in 1914
By Christopher Clark.
Harper, $29.99.

Clark manages in a single volume to provide a comprehensive, highly readable survey of the events leading up to World War I. He avoids singling out any one nation or leader as the guilty party. “The outbreak of war,” he writes, “is not an Agatha Christie drama at the end of which we will discover the culprit standing over a corpse.” The participants were, in his term, “sleepwalkers,” not fanatics or murderers, and the war itself was a tragedy, not a crime.

WAVE
By Sonali Deraniyagala.
Alfred A. Knopf, $24.

On the day after Christmas in 2004, Deraniyagala called her husband to the window of their hotel room in Sri Lanka. “I want to show you something odd,” she said. The ocean looked foamy and closer than usual. Within moments, it was upon them. Deraniyagala lost her husband, her parents and two young sons to the Indian Ocean tsunami. Her survival was miraculous, and so too is this memoir — unsentimental, raggedly intimate, full of fury.

Emmanuel Hoog: "The AFP wants to become the world's leading sports information”

INTERVIEW - In his second term, President and CEO of AFP, co-founder of the Forum d'Avignon, wants to strengthen the development of video and sales abroad.

CEO of the AFP began his second term as head of the news agency. Despite the pressure on prices, the AFP is profitable and wants to enjoy a rich sporting events in 2014 to take a step ahead.

LE FIGARO. -  You begin your second term as head of the AFP. How did you reform this institution?

Emmanuel HOOG. - The AFP is sitting on a very solid foundation, but I focused on the development of video and sales abroad. Today, the International represents 55 % of our commercial business against 50 % when I arrived. We distribute 200 videos per day, in all languages. This volume has tripled in four years. It is through the video we can win new contracts abroad in South America, Europe and Asia.

AFP presents its new range of sports for the Olympics in Sochi and the World Cup in Brazil. Are you going to integrate Twitter?

Sport is an area of excellence AFP because we follow the football, a sport with international influence, better than our U.S. competitors Associated Press and Reuters. Sport already represents 25 to 35 % of our offer but 12% of our revenue because we do not yet sell sport as a dedicated wire except in some foreign countries. Our major project is to market now sports theme in the broadest sense (result, economics, social and people) as a standalone thread and across applications. AFP wants to become the world's leading news agencies in the field of sport. The news agency of the future must remain both general and also have an area of excellence, as Reuters is the economy. Us is sport.

Twitter is a competitor?

No. Twitter is a major player in the information economy. But Twitter creates noise and uncertainty. Our job is to verify the information. Compare Twitter to a newsfeed does not make sense ! Our headlines are more than 140 characters and are not limited to the facts but put them back in context and give explanations. We are a news agency, a news agency in the Anglo- Saxon sense, we exist for over 180 years and we have experienced many changes as the emergence of radio, television, the Internet and maintaining social networks. We need to develop links with Twitter but we are a major player in the information.

AFP focuses on video. Will you create YouTube channel?

"It is more profitable to attack the market for televisions and Internet videos with that directly to YouTube channel."

Emmanuel Hoog

Our videos are already on YouTube, but we will not create a chain because there is a problem of monetization. It is more profitable to attack the market for televisions and Internet videos with that directly to YouTube channel.

Posed television and the Internet in your business?

Television and Internet sites represent nearly 30 % of our commercial business. But, like other customers, they are still primarily customers text and photo. Video this year represent 6 % of our revenues against 0.3 % a decade and less than 1 % in 2006. For our competitor AP, it already represents 25 %, so we will continue to grow in this area.

Your clients media accuse you to compete in the consumer market.

I 've always said that the AFP should be present on the Internet. We have completely redesigned our website and developed apps afp.com public abroad. Internet is important to develop our brand abroad and thus to gain market share.

AFP is difficult to manage socially. How is the current climate?

We are a company of fixed costs due to price deflation contracts and economic conditions we must adapt our costs, while keeping intact our forces editorial production. We started a social negotiation to see how to adapt the AFP 's strategic and competitive challenges.

AFP is profitable?

Yes, we derive a margin of 5 % on a turnover of 290 million euros, we must increase to meet the necessary technology investments forty million over five years. And when I see our competitors dismiss or face large deficits, we must be vigilant to keep this profitability.

Brussels has opened an investigation accusing you receive state aid. What is the result?

We are in the final straight. Brussels would soon enact measures that the French state should take. Today, the government pays a grant in the form of subscriptions over the AFP of 120 million euros per year. We demonstrated that the mission of the AFP is a mission of general interest. The European Commission should approve the method of calculating the cost of the mission of general interest, the State also remaining client AFP. This clarification will help sustain and secure our funding.

The State Will it reduce subscriptions in 2014?

The draft budget law provides to the contrary, a slight increase of € 123 million.

Your name runs for the presidency of Radio France and France Televisions. Are you a candidate?

I am committed to 4000 % AFP. If my name around, it falls within the scope of the rumor while I am in the field of information.

'MTV Unplugged - Live In Athens' — Release date: November 29th 2013

'MTV Unplugged - Live In Athens' — Release date: November 29th 2013

The greatest delight for the Scorpions fans, of which there are several million throughout the world, is the fact that there is no end in sight for the Farewell World Tour, even though this has been continuing for three years now.

Scorpions still are Germany’s internationally most popular rock band ever in the history of music, and of the 38 countries where farewell shows are planned, only 23 have been covered to date.

On top of this, the band has found the time and energy to bring to life a very special event: their first MTV Unplugged show.

On 11 and 12 September 2013, Klaus Meine (vocals, guitars), Rudolf Schenker (guitars, vocals), Matthias Jabs (guitars), Pawel Maciwoda (bass) and James Kottak (drums) played two fantastic acoustic sets in the Lycabettus theatre of Athens.

The open-air theatre, which was designed by the Greek architect Takis Zenetos in 1965 – and thus is just the same age as the story of the Scorpions – is situated on Mount Lycabettus, at 300m height, and offers an impressive view of the Greek metropolis.

But the spectacular scenery is not the only reason that convinced the Scorpions to choose Athens for the first ever open-air show in the history of MTV Unplugged.

‘When we were approached with the idea of playing an unplugged show, we immediately thought of Greece,’ Klaus Meine recalls.

Matthias Jabs adds, ‘We have fabulous fans all over the world, but the Greeks are absolute die-hard fans.’

Concerning the choice of venue, the Lycabettus theatre, Meine explains, ‘We played here many years ago. It is a beautiful place. I can remember that even back then the fans climbed onto the surrounding rocks. Of course we played some of the greatest classics this time, but we also performed a few new songs as well as material that we had never played live up to then. Those are songs which are very popular with the fans but which somehow never made it onto the set lists.’

More than ten years ago, the Scorpions had already played a few acoustic sets, the result of which, ‘Acoustica’, was released on CD and DVD in 2001, with great international success.

However, the current programme, including a total of two dozen songs, is virtually completely different.

First of all, we have the band’s brand new songs, whose stunning live debut filled the audience with instant enthusiasm.

Alongside ‘Dancing With The Moonlight’ and ‘Rock'n'Roll Band’, both of which can be easily imagined in perfect rock versions, Klaus Meine, Rudolf Schenker and Matthias Jabs presented one song each penned by every artist himself.

The instrumental track ‘Delicate Dance’ with Matthias Jabs as leader is based on guitar spheres which could easily settle in between the psychedelic glamour of Pink Floyd and the boogie folk of Led Zeppelin.

’Love Is The Answer’ is a ballad for which Rudolf Schenker took over as lead vocalist – a feat that does not happen very often.

And immediately after this, Klaus Meine surprises us with the world premiere of ‘Follow Your Heart’, another power ballad destined for the charts.

The show is opened by ‘Sting In The Tail’, arranged in Cajun style.

This song, taken from the eponymous album of 2010, bears witness to how deeply the Scorpions are rooted in rock'n'roll and blues, virtually the topsoil and nurture of hard rock.

The same applies to the set of classics that follow, such as ‘Pictured Life’, ‘Speedy's Coming’ or the hymnal ‘Born To Touch Your Feelings’, in which the Greek actress Dimitra Kokkori surprises with a truly heart-wrenching spoken-word part.

It goes without saying that the beautiful lady is not the only guest starring at this exceptional event.

On the nights featured here, the five Scorpions can count on the relentless support of the Swedish musicians and producers Mikael Nord Andersson (guitars, mandolin, lap steel, vocals) and Martin Hansen (guitars, harmonica, vocals), who are also responsible for the arrangements made specifically for the MTV Unplugged Show, and who also produced the latest Scorpions studio album.

Further Swedish support comes in the shapes of Ola Hjelm (guitars, vocals) and Hans Gardemar (keyboards, accordion, vocals), as well as from percussionist PiTTi Hecht from Hannover, who is renowned as one of the best percussionists in Europe.

To round off this magnificent cast performing at the Lycabettus theatre, there is a string ensemble consisting of eight Greek ladies, whom Klaus Meine introduces as ‘The Strings from Heaven’.

Indeed, a truly heavenly performance is offered by Klaus Meine and Hamburgbased CÄTHE with their version of ‘In Trance’.

CÄTHE, who released her second album, ‘Verschollenes Tier’, this summer, shows all her charisma in this true seventies classic.

‘Rock You Like A Hurricane’, one of the most popular rock songs by the Scorpions, and frenetically applauded by the audience, features Revolverheld’s Johannes Strate as guest vocalist battling with Klaus Meine, and the ultimate world hit ‘Wind Of Change’ offers a unique aha-experience in its own right when Morten Harket comes on stage for this encore.

Throughout its two-and-a-half hours, the show captivates with its numerous intimate moments and infectious adrenaline rushes (such as during a percussion solo).

And there are even more nuggets from the sheer endless stock of hits – such as ‘Still Loving You’ and ‘Big City Nights’, ‘No One Like You’ and ‘When The Smoke Is Going Down’ – as well as a few welcome surprises to dazzle the connoisseur.

‘When You Came Into My Life’, where Rudolf Schenker plays a sitar, is one of those tracks which the Scorpions had never before played live, as are ‘Where The River Flows’ and ‘Passion Rules The Game’.

In view of this unplugged marathon with the stunning emotional momentum it conveys, it is difficult to pinpoint single highlights, but what can be stated with certainty is that the Scorpions evidently enjoyed this musical rollercoaster ride through their own history.

It is equally obvious that both rock songs and power ballads display their class and style even when rendered as acoustic versions.

The melodies maintain their timeless compositional appeal and the quality of the performance proves time and again that the Scorpions are blessed – this time especially by the Greek gods, it seems.

Let us glance into the future: MTV Unplugged will be released in 50 countries and promises to be yet another success story in the sheer limitless Scorpions saga.

Fans can also look forward to the documentary motion picture ‘Big City Nights’ by Katja von Garnier, whose band portrait will be shown in cinemas before it is later released on DVD.

‘MTV Unplugged’ by the Scorpions is released on 29 November 2013, available as double CD, DVD, Bluray and in various other digital and physical configurations.

Curtain up for Budapest’s Liszt Academy

Curtain up for Budapest’s Liszt Academy

Budapest’s Liszt Academy has recently reopened its doors after a major and successful renovation.

Whilst enhancing its prestigious musical past this Hungarian institution, both a music university and a concert hall, is ambitiously projecting itself towards the future and reinventing its image.

“The building is beyond definition, the abundance in motifs and ornaments makes it unique, and the extent of their significance is still to be completely revealed. From these treasures from the past we are trying to project a modern brand,” says Imre Szabó Stein, Head of Communications.

The Academy, which was founded by Liszt in 1875, moved to the present wonderful Art Nouveau building in 1907.

Some of the greatest Hungarian musicians were trained here and top 20th century artists have performed in its breathtaking concert hall.

András Batta is the Academy’s President.

“Many musicians came here, big Russian artists, Richter, Rostropovich, they loved the hall, its special atmosphere. Through that, artists and the audience can get closer because the shape of the hall is like a bell, the artist is the clapper, and it’s as if the audience echoed this kind of ‘bell’, “ he says.

Some of today’s greatest Hungarian musicians performed at the reopening gala from pianist Bogányi to violinists Katalin Kokas and Barnabás Kelemen who also teach at the Academy.

“This is the temple of music, this is a shrine. And I always feel the same happiness when I enter this building, this is my alma mater. I was educated here from the age of 12: everything I have, I got it here, and it’s what I can offer my students,” explains Katalin Kokas.

“I’d like to say that my grandfather was one of the most influential gipsy orchestra leaders in the ’30s. I only knew him from old black and white films. My mother hardly remembers him because he died young, but blood is thicker than water…that’s why I really like playing gipsy music,” adds Barnabás Kelemen.

At the gala they played a few violin duos by Béla Bartók, a composer who somehow contributed to make Barnabás and Katalin a couple also in real life.

“At seventeen we got together thanks to the Bartók duos, and at that moment we realised we were made one for the other. We didn’t know at that time what the other thought about music, we just realised it was perfect harmony, and the differences we had integrated with each other,” she says.

In this story you can hear fragments of the following pieces:

- Johannes Brahms: Hungarian Dance No. 5 – Béla Bartók: 44 Duos for Two Violins (BB 104, excerpts) – Ernst von Dohnányi, Piano Quintet in C Minor, op. 1 – Allegro – Franz Liszt, Réminiscences de Don Juan

The tenor Roberto Alagna said they found “A new life"

The famous tenor Franco-Italian Roberto Alagna, 50, said he found a "new youth" and confesses that his passion for the opera he has served as therapy in difficult times, in an interview with AFP.

"They say they sing well when you're sad, but I think they sing better when we are happy," said the artist at the beginning of the interview at the Metropolitan Opera in Manhattan, with his partner, the Polish soprano Aleksandra Kurzak singer, 36 years and several months pregnant.

"It was hard for me to pass the age of 40," he says, while acknowledging that he lived "a small depression."

"But 50 years is easier. I feel fit. Perhaps the story of the new happiness, is expecting a baby. I feel a new kind of youth and serenity," he said.

"It's like a new beginning."

Moreover, “We feel it in my voice. She is young, she has a light, it is brilliant. Everybody says to me," insists the Sicilian tenor.

Born in 1963 in Clichy -sous -Bois, a suburb of Paris, Roberto Alagna already has a daughter, Ornella, twenties, after his first marriage.

Happiness and enthusiasm found the singer show that it is able to leave behind the pain of his separation from the Romanian soprano Angela Gheorghiu, his second wife, with whom he has trained over the years a golden couple of opera.

Their nuptials were celebrated with great pomp at the Met in 1996 by the mayor of New York at the time, Rudolph Giuliani.

Roberto Alagna, the opera was "the common thread" of his family.

"If I had not had this passion, I 'd be dead."
