 Jo-Wilfried Tsonga s’est qualifié pour la deuxième fois de sa carrière en demi-finales à Paris après son succès hier en cinq sets contre Kei Nishikori.

 

Battu à ce stade en 2013 par l'Espagnol David Ferrer, le dernier rescapé français affrontera cette fois-ci le Suisse Stan Wawrinka, vainqueur un peu plus tôt son compatriote Roger Federer (lire par ailleurs) en trois sets.

 

Ce sera sa sixième demi-finale majeure.

 

Deux fois demi-finaliste à Wimbledon (2011, 2012), Tsonga avait atteint son meilleur résultat en Grand Chelem en 2008 en accédant à la finale de l'Open d'Australie où il avait joué aussi une autre demi-finale en 2010.

 

 Le Manceau, 30 ans et 15e mondial, n'était pas le favori de ce duel contre Nishikori, finaliste de l'US Open l'été dernier.

 

Le Nippon de 25 ans, l'un des plus sûrs représentants de la relève masculine, l'avait battu quatre fois en cinq matchs.

Tsonga, lui, n'avait pas gagné plus de deux matchs d'affilée avant Roland-Garros.

 

Mais trois premiers tours expédiés chacun en trois manches, puis un coup d'éclat contre le Tchèque Tomas Berdych, quatrième mondial, l'avaient relancé.

 

Après un départ canon (4-0), Tsonga s'est adjugé la première manche en 32 minutes.

 

Toujours imprécis et sans doute gêné par les bourrasques, Nishikori continuait de faire des cadeaux au Français.

 

Mais alors que Tsonga s'apprêtait à servir pour le gain de la deuxième manche (5-2), la partie a été interrompue après la chute d'une plaque en métal sur une tribune du court central (lire par ailleurs).

 

L'arrêt du match a eu le don de remobiliser Nishikori.

 

 Tsonga a réussi à freiner le retour du Nippon grâce à sa résistance pour emporter le deuxième set, mais la balance penchait ensuite du côté de Nishikori qui faisait céder Tsonga après avoir sauvé trois balles de break à 4-4.

 

En baisse de régime, Tsonga perdait aussi la quatrième manche malgré une balle de débreak à 5-3.

 

 Mais le Manceau reprenait le dessus dans le dernier acte après avoir poussé Nishikori à la faute (3-1).

 

Il conservait ce break d'avance jusqu'au bout avant de faire plier Nishikori sur une dernière attaque de coup droit.

 

Score final : 6-1, 6-4, 4-6, 3-6, 6-3.

 

« Vous m'avez soutenu et quoi qu'il arrive je ne l'oublierai jamais. Aujourd'hui, je suis un homme comblé », a lancé pour finir Tsonga au public après avoir écrit « Roland, je t'aime » sur la terre du court central.

Un spectateur a été légèrement blessé par une plaque en métal tombée sur une tribune du court central de Roland-Garros pendant le quart de finale opposant le Français Jo-Wilfried Tsonga au Japonais Kei Nishikori.

 

La rencontre a été interrompue pendant plus de trente minutes, le temps de sécuriser la zone, alors que Tsonga menait 6-1, 5-2.

 

Touché au bras droit, le spectateur a été évacué par les secouristes sous les applaudissements du public.

Jo-Wilfried Tsonga qualified for the second time in his career semifinals in Paris yesterday after his success in five sets against Kei Nishikori.

 

Beaten at this stage in 2013 by Spaniard David Ferrer, the last French survivor will face this time the Swiss Stan Wawrinka, who won earlier compatriot Roger Federer (see elsewhere) in three sets.
