20e étape : Bergerac - Périgueux.

 

Jean-Christophe Péraud et Thibaut Pinot sont allés au bout de leur rêve : ils seront bien les dauphins du maillot jaune Vincenzo Nibali à Paris.

Les flashs qui crépiteront.

 

Le plus âgé des trois qui aura certainement encore du mal à retenir quelques larmes.

 

Voilà l'image qui fera la une des journaux, demain.

 

Voilà la scène qui fera vibrer, tout à l'heure, plus d'un Français, amoureux de la petite reine ou non.

 

Oui, Jean-Christophe Péraud et Thibaut Pinot sont allés au bout de leur rêve et ont par là même raviver ceux de tout un peuple.

 

Voilà trente ans que deux Français n'étaient pas montés sur un podium du Tour.

 

Et voilà des lustres que l'on n'osait plus en imaginer un vainqueur à Paris.

 

Ceci n'est pas encore fait mais, plus que jamais, ce rêve-là, ce rêve collectif, redevient possible.

 

" Rester plein de sang-froid "

 

Que ce contre-la-montre fut beau.

 

Que sa dramaturgie fut totale.

 

Avec cette crevaison de Jean-Christophe Péraud à vingt-quatre kilomètres de la ligne.

 

Tout le public de Périgueux a alors retenu son souffle, toute l'équipe d'Ag2r aussi.

 

Tout le monde, sauf Péraud.

 

« Je savais que j'avais un peu d'avance et, dans ces situations de stress, il faut au contraire rester plein de sang-froid », dira-t-il en toute tranquillité.

 

Et c'est vrai que Jean-Christophe Peraud avait alors fait l'essentiel en reléguant loin derrière Alejandro Valverde, et en prenant déjà l'avantage sur Thibaut Pinot.

 

Au premier temps intermédiaire, l'Espagnol pointait à 1'08'' et le Franc-Comtois à 43 secondes.

 

Amoureux de l'effort solitaire, souvent fort en troisième semaine, Peraud savait que ce chrono serait le sien.

 

Il le fut donc.

 

Mais le vrai tour de force est sans doute à mettre à l'actif de son cadet, Thibaut Pinot.

 

Deuxième avant cette dernière bataille, le protégé de Marc Madiot ne comptait qu'une poignée de secondes de marge.

 

Autant dire rien.

 

Mais lui aussi y croyait dur comme fer.

 

Et lui aussi allait avoir raison.

 

Troisième au classement général fictif après le premier chrono intermédiaire, le jeune loup de la FDJ.fr n'allait rien lâcher.

 

Bien au contraire.

 

Douzième de ce contre-la-montre, Pinot reléguait à 1'16'' Alejandro Valverde, réduit au rang de fer valoir le temps de 54 kilomètres.

 

C'était le chrono de leur vie.

 

Ils ont été au rendez-vous.

 

De quoi marquer à jamais leur carrière.

 

Même si eux ont déjà bien d'autres rêves en tête.

 

Qu'ils se nomment le Giro que Péraud veut maintenant découvrir, la Vuelta que Pinot devrait arpenter dès septembre mais avec un objectif d'étape plutôt que de général, pour le moment en tout cas.

 

Et puis bien sûr, le Tour de France.

 

Pas sûr que Jean-Christophe Péraud, 37 ans, ait le temps d'inscrire un jour son nom au palmarès de la Grande Boucle.

 

Pour Thinaut Pinot, en revanche, tous les rêves sont permis.

Des bonheurs si différents

 

Jean-Christophe Péraud et Vincenzo Nibali se ressemblent assurément.

 

Pour reprendre Daniel Mangeas (lire page ci-contre), l'un et l'autre sont des " Monsieur Tout-le-monde ".

 

Et hier, ils ont atteint un rêve.

 

L'un en remportant son premier Tour de France, l'autre en devenant son dauphin.
Mais à l'heure de conter leur bonheur, Vincenzo Nibali et Jean-Christophe Péraud paraissaient si différents.

 

Si loin l'un de l'autre.
Avec un Italien plus placide que jamais.

 

Moins affable qu'à l'accoutumée.

 

Presque sur la réserve quand il s'agissait de parler de sa famille.

 

Fuyant même à plusieurs reprises les questions portant sur le dopage, alors qu'il s'y est soustrait trois semaines durant.
Avec, à l'inverse, un Jean-Christophe Péraud ému aux larmes.

 

Ebranlé par son propre succès.

 

Loin de cette image si cartésienne qu'il renvoie d'ordinaire.
Il faut donc croire que gagner le Tour, ou finir deuxième de la Grande Boucle vous change bel et bien un homme.

 

Et tant pis si eux ne rêvent que d'une chose : rester eux-mêmes.

S. Chavanel : " Tellement d'années qu'on n'a pas vu deux Français sur le podium "

 

« J'ai suivi la bataille pour le podium dans la voiture, raconte Sylvain Chavanel. J'avais dit qu'ils (NDLR : Jean-Christophe Péraud et Thibaut Pinot) allaient rester sur le podium, je ne me suis pas trompé. C'est impressionnant ce qu'ils ont fait. Ça fait presque bizarre, il y a tellement d'années qu'on n'a pas vu deux Français sur le podium. J'ai vécu pas mal de Tours de France dans les années Armstrong, où les Français faisaient des places au général, mais bien plus en retrait. Ils ont eu l'occasion de briller et ils l'ont saisie, tant mieux pour le public français, et tant mieux pour le vélo si ça peut amener des jeunes dans notre sport. J'espère qu'ils feront des critériums d'après-Tour, ce serait une bonne chose pour eux, pour profiter de leur popularité. »
