All flights into Abu Dhabi’s international airport were on Thursday morning being diverted to other airports in the region, amid heavy fog in the United Arab Emirates capital.
State-owned carrier Etihad blamed a "technical failure" at the airport for the diversions, it said in a statement.
In an update, the airline said weather in Abu Dhabi is improving and the airport has started to accept traffic.
"Diverted flights are returning to Abu Dhabi subject to ground servicing and the arrival of stand-by operating crews, who are currently being transferred by road and by air where possible," it said.
"Five Etihad Airways flights have now landed at Abu Dhabi Airport, with another three diverted flights now returning to Abu Dhabi.
"Departures from Abu Dhabi have resumed, however significant delays are to be expected. Passengers are advised to check-in as normal and are also advised to call the Etihad Airways Contact Centre to confirm their flight status.
"Etihad Airways continues to work to minimise disruption to its customers. However, Etihad Airways anticipates that normal operations at Abu Dhabi Airport will not resume for approximately 24 hours."
