Merkel dice que la UE necesita a un Reino Unido fuerte

La jefa del Gobierno alemán, Angela Merkel, se convirtió este jueves en la tercera mandataria de su país en dirigirse al Parlamento británico, donde dijo que la Unión Europea (UE) necesita a un Reino Unido fuerte.

 

"Necesitamos un Reino Unido fuerte con una voz enérgica en la Unión Europea. Si lo tenemos, seremos capaces de hacer los cambios para beneficio de todos", dijo Merkel en el momento más relevante de su visita a Londres.

 

Merkel se dirigió a ambas cámaras del Parlamento, reunidas en la Galería real del palacio de Westminster.

 

De este modo, se suma a su homólogo Willy Brandt y al presidente Richard von Weizsäcker, que, en 1970 y 1986, respectivamente, ya disfrutaron de ese honor.

 

La canciller alemana reivindicó la europeidad de Londres en un momento de crisis entre Bruselas y el Gobierno británico del conservador David Cameron, que pide reformas en el bloque europeo y convocar un referéndum en 2017 preguntando a los británicos si quieren seguir en la UE.

 

Merkel dijo que no había venido a Londres a expresar apoyo al proyecto reformista de Cameron, ni tampoco a complacer a quienes piensan que "el resto de Europa no está preparada para mantener al Reino Unido en la Unión Europea a cualquier precio", pero dijo que los británicos no necesitan demostrar su vocación europea.

 

"¿Qué hubiera sido de Europa si la gente de su país no hubiera opuesto resistencia?" en las dos guerras mundiales contra Alemania, se preguntó Merkel.

 

"Gran Bretaña no necesita demostrar su compromiso con Europa", sentenció.
