Tennis à Cincinnati: Djokovic et Murray battus, Nadal élimine Federer

Les N.1 et N.2 mondiaux Novak Djokovic et Andy Murray ont été battus respectivement par John Isner et Tomas Berdych, vendredi en quarts de finale du Masters 1000 de Cincinnati (Ohio), tandis que Rafael Nadal disposait de son éternel rival Roger Federer en trois sets.

 

Nadal, N.3 mondial, est sorti vainqueur du 31e "classique" contre Federer, qui a sauvé quatre balles de match mais s'est incliné 5-7, 6-4, 6-3.

 

"Je suis un peu déçu, j'aurais pu mieux jouer à la fin du deuxième (set) et au début du troisième", a reconnu le Suisse, quintuple vainqueur du tournoi, qui va reculer du 5e au 7e rang mondial après sa défaite.

 

Nadal, invaincu sur dur cette saison après ses victoires à Indian Wells et Montréal la semaine dernière, affrontera au prochain tour Tomas Berdych, qui a dominé Murray en deux sets 6-3, 6-4.

 

Isner, vainqueur de "Djoko" en trois sets 7-6 (7/5), 3-6, 7-5, affrontera dans le dernier carré l'Argentin Juan Martin Del Potro, N.7 mondial, victorieux un peu plus tôt du Russe Dmitry Tursunov, également en trois manches, 6-4, 3-6, 6-1.

 

Pour Djokovic, c'est une grosse déception, lui qui n'a remporté que trois titres cette année, certes bien inaugurée par une victoire à l'Open d'Australie, mais qui n'a plus gagné un tournoi ni un match contre un membre du top 4 depuis avril et sa victoire contre Nadal (à l'époque N.5) en finale à Monte-Carlo.

 

Défait en finale de Wimbledon par Andy Murray, puis en demie la semaine dernière à Montréal par Nadal, Djokovic n'affiche plus une forme étincelante dès que gonfle l'enjeu des matches, à dix jours de l'US Open, dernière levée du Grand Chelem.

 

Finaliste de quatre des cinq dernières éditions de "Cinci", Djokovic ne sera donc pas cette année le premier joueur à réaliser le "Grand Chelem" des Masters 1000, le tournoi de l'Ohio étant le dernier qui manque à son palmarès.

 

En dépit d'une bataille longue de près de 2h30, "Djoko" s'est incliné logiquement, mis sous pression par le bruyant public américain et le jeu agressif d'Isner.

 

Del Potro touché au poignet

 

Après avoir sauvé deux balles de break dans le premier set, sans s'en créer une seule, le Serbe n'a en revanche pas pu voler le jeu décisif, enlevé par Isner.

 

Le second set démarrait sur les mêmes bases, Djokovic devant sauver quatre balles de break pour préserver son premier jeu de service.

 

Sans doute agacé par ces opportunités gâchées, le géant américain (2,08 m) se faisait breaker dans la foulée, et laissait échapper la manche au profit du Serbe (6-4).

 

Plus performant que Djokovic sur sa mise en jeu dans la dernière manche (83% de première balle contre 63%), Isner a pris ensuite l'ascendant dans les échanges.

 

Après une première balle de match effacée par un ace, Djokovic a enchaîné par une double-faute (5 au total) puis un coup droit dans le filet pour offrir la victoire à Isner.

 

La forme n'est pas meilleure pour Murray, qui défendra son titre à l'US Open, avec une défaite sèche et logique contre Berdych.

 

Déjà sorti dès les 8e de finale à Montréal par le Letton Ernests Gulbis la semaine dernière, Murray chute un nouvelle fois contre un Berdych en pleine confiance, qui l'avait déjà battu à Madrid au printemps.

 

Dans le premier quart de la journée, Del Potro a dû s'employer pour battre Tursunov en trois sets 6-4, 3-6, 6-1.

 

Face à Isner en demi-finale, il tentera de réitérer sa performance de Washington, où il s'était imposé en finale face à l'Américain début août, mais il devra ménager son poignet gauche, qui lui cause de nouveaux soucis.

 

"Oui, ça me gêne un petit peu, mais pas trop, a confié le vainqueur de l'US Open 2009.

 

J'essaie de jouer des slices ou différents coups avant l'US Open pour voir comment je peux jouer autrement face aux grands joueurs ou essayer des choses différentes."

Cincinnati Tennis: Djokovic and Murray beaten Nadal eliminates Federer

 

The world No.1 and No.2 Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray have beaten respectively by John Isner and Tomas Berdych on Friday in the quarterfinals of the Masters 1000 Cincinnati (Ohio), while Rafael Nadal had his eternal rival Roger Federer in three sets.

 

Nadal, world No.3, was the winner of the "classic" 31st against Federer, who saved four match points but lost 5-7, 6-4, 6-3.

 

"I'm a little disappointed, I would have played better at the end of the second (set) and early in the third," admitted the Swiss five-time winner of the tournament, which will reduce the 5th to 7th in the world after his defeat .

 

Nadal, unbeaten on hard this season after wins in Indian Wells and Montreal last week, will face Tomas Berdych in the next round, which dominated Murray in straight sets 6-3, 6-4.

 

Isner, winner of "Djoko" in three sets 7-6 (7/5), 3-6, 7-5, will play in the final four Argentine Juan Martin Del Potro, the world N.7 victorious earlier Dmitry Tursunov of Russia, also in three sets, 6-4, 3-6, 6-1.
