Le Japonais Kei Nishikori a créé la sensation avec sa nette victoire face au N.1 mondial Novak Djokovic 6-4, 1-6, 7-6 (7/4), 6-3, samedi en demi-finale de l'US Open.

 

Grâce à ce retentissant succès, le 11e joueur mondial est le premier Asiatique à atteindre la finale d'un Grand Chelem.

 

Il affrontera lundi soit le Suisse Roger Federer soit le Croate Marin Cilic, opposés dans la seconde demi-finale dont le début a été retardé par la pluie.

 

Nishikori, 24 ans, avait disputé lors des deux tours précédents des marathons de plus de quatre heures.

 

Mais il n'a pas semblé affecté ni par la fatigue ni par la lourde chaleur (35°C, 70% d'humidité) qui s'est abattue à nouveau sur Flushing Meadows.

 

A l'inverse, Djokovic, vainqueur à Wimbledon en juillet et qui avait disputé les quatre dernières finales de l'US Open, a paru beaucoup moins tranchant que lors des tours précédents.

 

Il a notamment commis un nombre inhabituellement élevé de fautes directes (35) et n'a pas pu s'appuyer suffisamment sur son service.

 

"Je n'étais pas vraiment moi sur le court. Ce ne sont pas les conditions ou autre chose, je n'ai simplement pas joué à mon niveau", a regretté "Djoko".

 

"J'ai joué du mieux que j'ai pu, mais ce n'était pas suffisant", a-t-il poursuivi.

 

Nishikori a entamé le match tambour battant, claquant son coup droit dynamite avec une précision redoutable.

 

Après un échange de breaks en début de manche, le Japonais n’en restait pas moins plus explosif, déterminé à prendre la direction des opérations à la moindre ouverture.

 

Au 7e jeu, il s’est à nouveau octroyé le break d’un magnifique retour de coup droit gagnant, avant de surfer sur cet avantage pour s'offrir le set 6-4 après 39 minutes de jeu.

 

Dans la deuxième manche, Djokovic a montré un tout autre visage en remportant cinq jeux de rang pour égaler à une manche partout.

 

Au 3e set, Nishikori a dû écarter quatre balles de break au cours d’un 3e jeu de plus de 10 minutes.

 

Retrouvant son tonus du début du match, il s’est détaché 5-3, mais un mauvais jeu de service a permis au Serbe de recoller au score.

 

Sur sa lancée, il a ravi le service de Djokovic, avant d’écarter trois balles de "débreak" au jeu suivant.

 

Le Serbe qui disputait sa 17e demi-finale lors des 18 derniers tournois du Grand Chelem, ne s'en est pas remis.

 

"Je ne sais pas ce qui se passe, a admis Nishikori. J’avoue que j’étais un peu tendu avant cette première demi-finale en Grand Chelem. C’est vraiment super de battre le N.1 et de pratiquer un tennis meilleur que lors de mes deux matches précédents".
