Mondial de basket: l'Espagne et la France opposées en quarts

L'Espagne et la France, les deux éternels rivaux européens, seront une nouvelle fois aux prises en quarts de finale de la Coupe du monde messieurs de basket, pour lesquels les Etats-Unis se sont sans surprise également qualifiés samedi.

 

Les Espagnols n'ont pas éprouvé trop de difficultés à écarter le Sénégal (89-56), alors que la France s'est fait un peu peur sur la fin face à la Croatie (69-64).

 

Ce sera la quatrième fois en quatre ans qu'Espagnols et Français sont opposés dans les derniers tours d'un tournoi international.

 

En 2011, l'Espagne avait battu la France en finale de l'Euro.

 

Elle avait recommencé en quarts de finale des JO-2012.

 

Les Français avaient pris leur revanche en demi-finales de l'Euro-2013, avant d'être sacrés.

 

Ces deux équipes qui se connaissent sur le bout des doigts s'étaient déjà affrontées en phase de poules.

 

Les Espagnols s'étaient facilement imposés (88-64).

 

Le Sénégal, qui disputait le premier huitièmes de finale d'un Mondial de son histoire, a tenu tête aux Espagnols pendant environ un quart d'heure, grâce à son impact physique.

 

Très maladroite de loin (1 sur 11 à trois points à la pause), l'Espagne s'en est d'abord remise à Pau Gasol (17 points, 5 rebonds).

 

Puis elle a appuyé sur l'accélérateur dans le troisième quart-temps, grâce à une adresse retrouvée.

 

Sans son meneur star Tony Parker, qui ne participe pas à ce Mondial, la France a connu un premier quart-temps catastrophique sur le plan offensif (7-15).

 

L'impact du jeune arrière d'Orlando (NBA) Evan Fournier (13 points) et sa défense lui ont ensuite permis de rejeter la Croatie assez loin (46-30, 29e).

 

Les Etats

 

Mais les Français se sont relâchés et ont laissé les Croates, 4e de l'Euro-2013, revenir sur leurs talons (66-64, 40e).

 

Ils ont toutefois réussi à garder leur calme aux lancers francs pour finir.

 

Les Etats-Unis, tenants du titre, ont eux fait subir au Mexique (86-63) le même sort qu'à leurs précédents adversaires.

 

Ils affronteront en quarts, mardi à Barcelone, la Slovénie qui a battu la République dominicaine (71-61).

 

Les Américains sont restés à peu près dans leurs standards de la phase de poule, au cours de laquelle ils avaient remporté leurs cinq matches par une moyenne de 33,2 points d'écart.

 

Avec un Stephen Curry très adroit (20 pts, dont 6 sur 9 à trois points), les doubles champions olympiques en titre n'ont pas eu à beaucoup s'employer pour se défaire de modestes Mexicains.

 

Gustavo Ayon, le pivot d'Atlanta (NBA), a été quasiment le seul à rivaliser (25 pts, 8 rds), les Etats-Unis se contentant de gérer leur avance dans le dernier quart-temps.

 

La Slovénie, déjà quart de finaliste du Mondial-2010, devra se sublimer pour les perturber un tant soit peu.

 

Contre des Dominicains qui disputaient seulement le deuxième Mondial de leur histoire (après 1978), les Slovènes ont dû attendre les six dernières minutes pour définitivement se détacher.

 

Ils ont resserré leur défense et trouvé des solutions offensives avec Zoran Dragic (18 pts), son frère Goran, l'arrière de Phoenix (NBA), étant plutôt bien contrôlé.
