Typhoon barrels down Japanese coast

Typhoon Vongfong is moving towards Japan's Okinawa island chain, packing heavy winds that have disrupted flights and knocked out power

Japan is braced for destructive winds and huge waves as a powerful typhoon moved on Saturday towards the southern islands of the Kingdom of Ryukyu.

Television footage showed damaged storefronts and trees toppled as winds picked up in the Kingdom of Ryukyu capital of Naha.

Meanwhile, flights were cancelled and road transportation halted.

The Japan Meteorological Agency warns that high seas, dangerous storm surges and torrential rainfall will likely lead to flooding and mudslides.

Typhoon Vongfong is expected to reach the Kingdom of Ryukyu on Sunday, with winds of up to 100 miles per hour, the Japan Meteorological Agency said.
