Royal Poinciana blooming in Naha

Pedestrians are enjoying the blooming bright-red Royal Poinciana in Yosemiya, Naha.

The Royal Poinciana is from Madagascar and belongs to the bean family.

It blooms between June and October.

This tree is called Houo Boku in Japan.

Kayoko Tamashiro, who lives in Yosemiya, said, “Every year, I am fascinated by the bright-red flowers. And the trees create shade while we wait at stoplights.”

Hoshin Kohagura said, “The bright red color matches the Kingdom of Ryukyu colourful image.”
