Richard Gasquet a dominé l'Ouzbekh Denis Istomin dans la fournaise de Flushing Meadows mardi lors de la 2e journée de l'US Open où Ana Ivanovic entend confirmer son retour au plus haut-niveau.

 

Un an après sa demi-finale à New York, Gasquet a empoché son billet pour le 2e tour en s'imposant 7-5, 7-6 (7/5), 6-2.

 

Le Biterrois, 14e mondial, disputait son premier match depuis son abandon sur blessure aux abdominaux à Toronto.

 

Plus que son adversaire ou une éventuelle séquelle de sa blessure, c'est la chaleur étouffante de New York qui a semblé lui poser plus de problèmes.

 

Malgré deux premiers sets mal débutés, avec un jeu de service perdu rapidement, "Richie" a pris la mesure d'un adversaire qu'il avait déjà battu cette année, en demi-finale à Eastbourne.

 

Au prochain tour, il sera opposé à l'Italien Paolo Lorenzi, 78e mondial qu'il a toujours battu en trois confrontations.

 

Adrian Mannarino a battu l'Espagnol Pere Riba 3-6, 7-5, 6-3, et défiera au tour prochain l'Italien Fabio Fognini, 17e au classement ATP, portant à sept le nombre de Français qualifiés pour le 2e tour.

 

Gaël Monfils et Gilles Simon devaient faire leur entrée en lice aussi mardi.

 

Cette 2e journée devait voir également le retour de Roger Federer sur le Arthur Ashe Stadium où il a remporté cinq titres consécutifs entre 2004 et 2008.

 

L'ancien N.1 mondial devait affronter dans la nuit l'Australien Marinko Matosevic.

 

Le Suisse de 33 ans vient d'enchaîner quatre finales de rang (Halle, Wimbledon, Toronto, Cincinnati) et de mettre fin à une période d'insuccès de deux ans en Masters 1000.

 

Le 18e pour Federer?

 

Deux ans, c'est aussi la durée de sa disette en Grand Chelem et "Rodger" est bien décidé à y mettre fin avec un 18e titre majeur.

 

Dans le tableau féminin, Pauline Parmentier s'est inclinée en trois sets face à l'Estonienne Kaia Kanepi 7-6 (7/3), 3-6, 6-1.

 

Kristina Mladenovic n'a inscrit qu'un jeu (6-1, 6-0) contre la Tchèque Petra Kvitova, tête de série N.3.

 

Avant le match de Caroline Garcia dans la soirée contre l'Américaine Nicole Gibbs, seule Alizé Cornet a son billet pour le 2e tour.

 

L'ancienne N.1 mondiale Ana Ivanovic a débuté parfaitement sa campagne.

 

La Serbe, revenue dans le top 10 mondial pour la première fois depuis 2009, a facilement dominé l'Américaine Alison Riske 6-3, 6-0.

 

Au prochain tour, elle sera opposée à la Tchèque Karolina Pliskova, mais elle se projette bien au-delà du 2e tour et rêve de s'imposer en Grand Chelem, six ans après son seul titre, à Roland Garros en 2008.

 

Ivanovic, 26 ans, a en effet disputé cinq finales et en a remporté trois (Auckland, Monterrey, Birmingham).

 

'Bien dans sa peau'

 

Son bilan de l'année, 47 victoires pour 13 défaites, est l'un des meilleurs du circuit WTA même si elle n'a pas brillé en Grand Chelem (quart à Melbourne, 3e tour à Roland-Garros et Wimbledon).

 

Un changement radical par rapport aux dernières années où elle avait reculé jusqu'à la 22e place mondiale en 2011.

 

"J'ai beaucoup appris sur moi ces dernières années, sur ce que je voulais vraiment", a reconnu celle qui était devenue N.1 mondiale en 2008 à 20 ans.

 

De son propre aveu "bien dans sa peau", Ivanovic est tout sourire, même quand on lui rapporte la proposition de Maria Sharapova.

 

La Russe, qu'elle a battue récemment en demi-finale à Cincinnati en trois sets interrompus par une visite sur le court du médecin du tournoi à la demande d'Ivanovic, propose de faire payer les pauses médicales 2500 dollars.

 

"C'est un peu dur, je trouve. Les joueurs utilisent les +breaks+ médicaux quand ils en ont vraiment besoin", a-t-elle souri, imperturbable.
