ANA-MPA - The last register of the wall protecting the entrance at the monumental Kasta tomb in Ancient Amphipolis was removed, the ministry of Culture said on Tuesday, revealing part of a mosaic floor at the entrance to the monument.
Meanwhile, removal of the earth from the interior is continuing, as is the supporting work in the same sections of the tomb, which was covered by earth creating a massive mound, or tumulus, with a retaining wall.
A temporary cover of the excavated part was completed on Tuesday, to protect excavators and the monument from weather conditions.
A team of specialists including a civil engineer, an architect, a geotechnical engineer, a surveyor, a conservator and a geologist was convened by the site's chief archaeologist Katerina Peristeri to advice excavators on how to support walls, protect the monument from rain, and preserve the findings, especially the frescoes.
