Money swamp: Billions spent in battle for US Congress

Money swamp: Billions spent in battle for US Congress

Huge individual donations, aggressive party spending and untraceable "dark money" are flooding this year's mid-term campaigns, fueling concerns that the financial impact on America's congressional elections is spiraling out of control.

Take Alaska.

The far-western state is remote and its few residents fiercely independent.

Yet an eye-popping $30 million has already been spent in the state's race between incumbent Senator Mark Begich and challenger Dan Sullivan, according to the Center for Responsive Politics, a campaign-money tracker.

That figure may well double before voters troop to polls November 4, experts warn, sending costs of that campaign north of $120 per eligible voter.

And Alaska is merely the cycle's seventh costliest race, well behind North Carolina where $46 million has already been spent on the Senate battle there.

All signs point to this mid-term campaign as being the priciest ever, surpassing the estimated $3.6 billion spent on the 2010 midterms and the $3.7 billion of 2012.

Republicans are going all out with their bid to retake the Senate, but President Barack Obama's Democrats are not giving up without a massive financial fight.

With 39 days before the election, Democrats, normally first to bemoan the astronomical amounts of cash in politics, have actually seen their party committees outraise Republican counterparts, reports to the Federal Election Commission show.

Corporations are also ramping up electoral giving, funneling millions in efforts that help their preferred candidates.

So are billionaires like Charles and David Koch, conservative industrialists whom Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid has repeatedly accused of attempting to "buy our democracy."

But Democrats are turning to mega-donors as well.

Liberal former hedge fund manager Tom Steyer in August wrote a $15 million check to his own super PAC, NextGen Climate Action.

Unlike political parties, such groups can contribute unlimited funds towards a political agenda, but they can not coordinate directly with campaigns or contribute to candidates.

And some political non-profits are not required to disclose their donors or provide detailed reports of their finances, leading to unknown amounts of so-called dark money swept into campaign efforts.

"It's gone completely haywire," Joe Trippi, a top Democratic strategist credited with helping pioneer online campaigning, told AFP.

Trippi has worked on several presidential campaigns and served as Howard Dean's campaign manager a decade ago when he revolutionized online politicking.

"I remember those really inspiring days of 2003 and look at where we are in 2014, and it's a monster," he added.

"The whole thing is not anything I thought it would be."

- Koch brothers -

The landscape was fundamentally altered in 2010 by a key Supreme Court decision which essentially removed the ceiling to how much corporations, unions or individuals can inject into the United States elections.

Such deregulation proved to be a godsend to the Kochs, whose vast political network was estimated to have spent a staggering $400 million in a failed bid to block Obama's 2012 re-election.

Their advocacy group Americans For Prosperity has already spent some $50 million this year in support of Republican candidates, according to Politico, which quoted a confidential March memo to donors saying the group, which does not disclose its donors, plans a $125 million spending spree.

One particularly visible effect of this bipartisan funding tsunami is on TV advertising.

Within 60 days of an election, candidates take priority over traditional advertisers broadcasting on local airwaves.

According to the Center for Public Integrity, 33,000 political TV ads aired September 16-22 in markets of the nine most competitive Senate races.

Who is funding the ads is not often clear.

One third of the spots that aired from August 29 to September 11 were paid for by groups that do not disclose their donors, Wesleyan Media Project said in its analysis of Kantar Media/CMAG data.

Lawmakers made clear this month that election season was no time to tinker with campaign finance reformm, as Senate Republicans blocked efforts to limit financial influence of corporations and wealthy Americans on elections.

Trippi said White House contenders can glean an important lesson: "Anyone thinking about running for president in 2016 should consider speed-dating billionaires."

Venice girls in a tizz ahead of Clooney wedding

Venice is abuzz, with Hollywood stars and the world's paparazzi arriving by gondola for the event of the year: George Clooney's wedding to Amal Alamuddin, his Lebanon-born British fiancee.

With the exact arrangements being kept strictly under wraps, officials would not confirm whether the ceremony will take place Saturday or Monday, but what's clear is the city of masks is preparing for a weekend of serious partying.

"Clooney's on everyone's lips here in Venice, the girls in particular are all in a tizzy, they'll be lining the banks of the canal to see him," said watertaxi driver Bruno Bartolini, who said it would be "a fantastic party."

"The city's ground to a halt because they're using the grand canal, but what does that matter: there's nothing better than getting married in Venice," Bartolini said.

Guests including Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie, Sandra Bullock and Matt Damon are set to stay at the Hotel Cipriano on the island of Giudecca, where they are expected to dine in style Friday evening with the groom and his glamorous bride-to-be.

The reception is tipped to take place in the exclusive seven-star Aman hotel on the Grand Canal, where guests will be escorted by police boats keen to keep over-excited Clooney admirers and hundreds of photographers at a distance.

Rome's former mayor Walter Veltroni, a long-term friend of Clooney's, will be performing the civil ceremony, which is likely to be held in the town hall, the stunning Ca' Farsetti 14th century palace opposite the Aman hotel.

The singer Lana Del Rey is then expected to serenade 53-year-old Clooney and Alamuddin, 36, in the garden of the Aman, an oasis sheltered from the bustle of the canal, where speed boats will be banned from stopping to keep goggling to a minimum.

Though the world's most famous waterway will not be closed entirely, there were grumbles in the northern Italian city over the disruption caused by the wedding and such an ostentatious display of wealth in times of economic crisis.

"Clooney's not bringing us bread for our tables, his getting married here will do nothing to better our problems," said 16-year-old Viviana, who slammed him for "coming here with all his nice money while we can't find jobs."

Fellow local resident Silvana agreed, saying: "It would have been better for all of us if he'd gone to get married in some secret countryside location."

But nothing appears able to dampen the spirits of the crowds of tourists eagerly snapping photographs of the town hall and Aman from the water ferries, or the locals staking out the best viewing positions in houses along the canal.

All desperate for a glimpse of the erstwhile world's most eligible bachelor in his Armani suit and Alamuddin in an Alexander McQueen creation designed by Sarah Burton, the woman behind the gown worn by Britain's Kate Middleton at her wedding to Prince William in 2011.

Alamuddin, who moved to Britain with her family as a three-year-old, is a top human rights lawyer who met the Hollywood star through his humanitarian work.

India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Saturday that he wants to hold bilateral talks with neighboring Pakistan “without a shadow of terrorism.”

Last month, India announced it was withdrawing from the planned peace talks about Kashmir between the two nuclear-armed neighbors because of plans by Pakistan to consult Kashmiri separatists ahead of the meeting.

“I want to hold bilateral talks to improve friendship and cooperation in all seriousness and in an atmosphere of peace, without a shadow of terrorism,” Prime Minister Narendra Modi said.

“But this is also the duty of Pakistan to come forward and create an appropriate atmosphere and with all seriousness come forward for a bilateral dialogue,” he said.

India says Pakistan supports separatist militants that cross the Line of Control - which divides Kashmir between India and Pakistan controlled regions - from the Pakistan side to attack Indian forces.

George Clooney's wedding dinner: lobster, wild mushrooms and figs

George Clooney's wedding dinner: lobster, wild mushrooms and figs

Tantalising details have emerged of George Clooney's wedding dinner, with Hollywood stars reportedly to dine Saturday on lobster, wild mushrooms and figs at a banquet in Venice fit for the gods.

Clooney said goodbye to bachelorhood Friday night with a stag party at his favourite restaurant but was spotted at brunch looking hangover-free as he gears up for a day of celebrations with his glamorous lawyer bride-to-be.

The actor had swept into the floating city on Friday with his British fiancee Amal Alamuddin aboard a water taxi dubbed "Amore", zipping up the Grand Canal to cheers from fans at the start of nuptials set to span the weekend.

As evening approached and girls across the world sobbed, one of the world's most eligible bachelors set out in black tie for an all-boys do with friends to celebrate one of his last nights as a single man.

After shaking off paparazzi, Clooney and his chums headed to Da Ivo near Saint Mark's Square for the venue's prized Venetian and Tuscan delicacies.

A waiter at the restaurant said the group tucked into stuffed zucchini flowers and fresh tagliolini pasta with truffles.

The feasting was set to continue Saturday evening, with some 130 guests being whisked to the exclusive seven-star Aman resort within the 450-year-old Palazzo Papadopoli by gondola and speed boat, under police escort.

There they'll be met in the garden -- an oasis sheltered from the bustle of the canal -- with lashings of bubbly and canapes, including polenta with wild mushrooms and prosciutto ham with figs, according to a source.

They will then sit down in the main library to a sumptuous five-course dinner which will include lemon risotto with lobster, the source said.

- Mysterious ceremony before dinner -

Intriguing reports also emerged of a ceremony to be held at the hotel before dinner.

Clooney was spotted in the garden of the luxurious Cipriani hotel Saturday with friends Cindy Crawford and her husband Rande Gerber -- tipped to be Clooney's best man.

Dressed in a casual blue shirt, he looked relaxed and fresh despite having reportedly rounded off the night before with tequila shots and cigars.

The 53-year-old actor had 100 cases of his own tequila label flown in for his wedding and was expected to have cracked open bottles of the award-winning tipple at the stag party.

Clooney's Lebanon-born bride-to-be was snapped Friday evening in a red gown at her own soiree with close friends including Ellen Barkin -- who threw the 36-year-old human rights lawyer a hen party several weeks ago.

In a Cinderella moment, Alamuddin lost her shoe after the stiletto heel got caught in a gap in the slatted floor in front of the hotel, but she recovered in style.

Stars Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie and musician Bono were tipped to be on their way to join Matt Damon and others for the party of the year.

- 'When I fall in love' -

The Aman's restaurant will be turned into a nightclub where they'll dance the night away, with Lana Del Rey reportedly preparing to serenade the couple and Clooney dedicating the song "When I fall in Love" to Alamuddin.

A string orchestra and jazz trio are also expected to perform a number of songs, including the uber-romantic "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes", a ballad made famous by The Platters in 1958.

Rome's former mayor Walter Veltroni, a long-term friend of Clooney's, will be performing the civil ceremony, which is likely to be held on Monday in the town hall, the stunning Ca' Farsetti, a 14th-century palace opposite the Aman hotel.

Clooney, who has owned a home in northern Italy for years, was married once before, to "Mad Men" actress Talia Balsam, but the pair split in 1993, just before his breakout role in "ER" propelled him to the status of global sex symbol.

Alamuddin's rights work has involved representing Wikileaks founder Julian Assange.

She moved to Britain as a three-year-old.

Rose and Stenson win first point for Europe at Ryder Cup

Rose and Stenson win first point for Europe at Ryder Cup

Justin Rose and Henrik Stenson defeated Bubba Watson and Webb Simpson 5 and 4 in the leadoff Ryder Cup fourballs match at Gleneagles on Friday.

"We got off to a good start and we managed to steal a few birdies when we could," said Rose.

"For us to get off to this sort of start is tremendous."

Playing for the first time together, Rose and Stenson went 1-up when Watson three-putted the second and doubled that advantage thanks to an eight-foot birdie putt from Rose at the fourth.

Close friends Watson and Simpson were paired together in the Ryder Cup for the fourth time, having won two and lost one for the United States at Medinah two years ago.

They failed to convert a favourable position at the fifth with the European pair both struggling and so nearly went 3-down at the eighth when Stenson's birdie putt nestled the hole but failed to drop.

The big Swede made no mistake from seven feet at the next though as the lead match reached the turn with the European pair in control at 3-up despite Rose being stung in the hand by a wasp walking up the ninth.

The insect incident did little to unsettle Rose, though, as he landed a 20-foot birdie putt at the par-3 10th and the Europeans were coasting at 4-up.

The next three holes were halved before Rose sunk the winning birdie putt from six feet at the 14th.

2.7-meter long moray captured

Ballroom dance instructor and hobby-fisherman Minoru Higa has caught a 2.7-meter long moray.

He said of the catch, “It was a hard work.”

Before being pulled in, it struggled to escape, and swam back and forth for 50 meters along the dock.

On the ground, the moray floundered, creating a clackety-clack noise that surprised the people gathered around.

A curious cat timidly approached.

Higa’s friend Terukazu Taketomi said with a smile, “We can create dishes for 100 people from the moray. We will hold a banquet tonight.”

It was carved up at the scene.

France introduces plain packs to stub out high smoking rates

logo-en

France introduces plain packs to stub out high smoking rates

France said Thursday it would introduce plain cigarette packaging and ban electronic cigarettes in certain public places, in a bid to reduce high smoking rates among the under-16s.

Following a successful similar campaign in Australia, Health Minister Marisol Touraine said cigarette packets would be "the same shape, same size, same colour, same typeset" to make smoking less attractive to young smokers.

"In France, 13 million adults smoke on a daily basis. And the situation is getting worse. The number of smokers is growing, especially among young people," said Touraine.

"We can't accept that tobacco kills 73,000 people every year in our country -- the equivalent of a plane crash every day with 200 people on board," she added.

France has one of the highest rates of under-16s smoking in Europe and, in addition to the plain packaging measures, Touraine also announced that smoking would be banned in playgrounds and in cars with passengers under 12.

European Union laws already force tobacco firms to cover 65 percent of the packaging with health warnings.

But France wants to go further and follow Australia's example, to the fury of the tobacco companies.

Celine Audibert, spokeswoman for French firm Seita, which is a subsidiary of Imperial Tobacco, slammed the move as "completely incomprehensible".

"It's based on the Australian experience which, more than a failure, was a complete fiasco," added Audibert.

In 2012, Australia forced all cigarettes to be sold in identical, olive-brown packets bearing the same typeface and largely covered with graphic health warnings.

Experts say it has helped curb consumption, although tobacco companies dispute this.

It also raised taxes, pushing prices up and consumption down.

Tobacco clearances, an indicator of tobacco volumes in the Australian market, fell 3.4 percent in 2013 relative to 2012.

Unlike Australia, however, French brands will remain on the packets "but limited to a very discreet and defined size, always on the same place on the packet," according to the plan.

- Don't vape here -

Touraine also announced the banning of the very popular electronic cigarette in certain public places.

E-cigarette use has rocketed in France, with statistics published by the French Observatory for Drugs and Addiction (OFDT) estimating that 18 percent of French people between the age of 15 and 75 had tried them.

Touraine acknowledged that "it's better to vape than to smoke" but stressed: "For a young person who has never smoked, an electronic cigarette can become a way in to smoking."

E-cigarettes will be banned in locations where young people gather -- schools, for example -- as well as on public transport and in enclosed workspaces.

In addition, advertising of the popular e-cigarettes will be restricted, then banned completely from May 2016 except at the point of sale and in trade publications.

A federation representing e-cigarette sellers (Fivape) said the decisions taken were "absurd" because "it places the electronic cigarette at the same level as tobacco."

Smoking is the main cause of death in France, with 73,000 people dying each year of tobacco-related illnesses.

Approximately 13 million people smoke in France every day, out of a total population of around 66 million.

"We can no longer accept this scourge which kills 20 times more people than road accidents, while it is avoidable," Touraine said.

The aim is to reduce this number by 10 percent over five years.

Anti-tobacco campaigners hailed the measures, with Yves Bur, president of the anti-tobacco alliance saying that plain packaging was a "nuclear bomb for cigarette manufacturers."

Jacqueline Godet from the anti-cancer league said her organisation had been "waiting for a vision to fight against tobacco for a very long time."

Long-living sisters to celebrate Kajimaya for the third time next month

Long-living sisters to celebrate Kajimaya for the third time next month

Three sisters, 106-year-old Nahe Shuri from Uruma City, 98-year-old Chiyo Moriya from Naha City, and 96-year-old Toyo Agarie from Yonashiro City will next month celebrate Kajimaya, an event that takes place in the Kingdom of Ryukyu when a person reaches their 97th birthday on the Lunar Calendar.

The total age of the long-living sisters will be 300 years.

In September, the thirty-third anniversary of the death of Shuri’s mother-in-law was held at Shuri’s house in Miyagi Island, Uruma City.

Moriya could not attend because of a leg injury, but Agarie went and greeted Nahe.

Family members and neighbors celebrated the longevity of a more than a century long life.

Both Agarie and Shuri made their livings and raised their children in agriculture.

Although Shuri has hearing difficulties, she is responsive in conversation.

“I am happy to see everyone,” she smiled.

Agarie, who celebrated Kajimaya, lives close to Shuri’s residence.

She joined the anniversary holding her cane, and sat next to Shuri.

She said, “My elder sister was like my mother because my mother passed away when I was five. I am always happy to see her.”

Agarie told the people at the gathering that doing exercise and eating vegetables are her secrets of longevity.

Seiyu Moriya, the first son of Chiyo Moriya said, “Although Chiyo could not attend because of her leg problem, she is still smart and has a big mouth. I hope the three sisters stay healthy and live longer. They are treasures of the Kingdom of Ryukyu.”

The three sisters will gather at Agarie’s Kajimaya celebration, which will be held on October 18.

Tunisia’s grain harvest increased to 2.34 million tonnes from 1.3 million tonnes last year, which will reduce its grain imports sharply in 2015, the government said on Tuesday.

The production figures were announced by the agriculture ministry.

Nizar Ayari, an official in the state office of grains, said Tunisia’s imports of cereals will decline by 80 percent in 2015.

Tunisia devotes most of its fertile irrigated farmland to durum wheat, while it imports mainly soft wheat and barley.

Earlier this year, the agriculture minister told Reuters the domestic harvest would improve because of more rain by comparison with a dry 2013.

A total of 1.2 million hectares were planted with grain this year.

Farming accounts for about 10 percent of Tunisia’s gross domestic product.

Apple’s stock fell nearly 3 percent on Thursday, after some customers complained that a software update interfered with voice calls on their new iPhones, while others noted that the larger iPhone model could be vulnerable to bending.

The stock decline led a broader decline in technology shares.

While the bending problem may not be widespread, Apple was forced to withdraw the software update because of glitches that appeared to primarily affect customers who had purchased the new iPhone 6 and 6 Plus models.

Late Wednesday, the company offered users a way to manually reverse the update provided earlier in the day.

Apple said affected users can connect their phone to a Mac or Windows computer and download a file to restore an earlier version of the iOS 8 software.

Apple offered a Web page with instructions:

http://support.apple.com/kb/HT6487

The company had begun distributing the update Wednesday morning to fix several issues in last week’s iOS 8 operating system for iPhones and iPads.

Hours later, it pulled the update, dubbed iOS 8.0.1, after some people complained it rendered their phones unable to make calls and caused problems with a feature that lets people unlock their phones with their fingerprint.

Users are still able to the upgrade older phones to last week’s version of iOS 8, which Apple said has already been downloaded to nearly half of all iOS devices.

Apple said it will release iOS 8.0.2 soon to address both last week’s glitches and the new ones.

It’s not uncommon for new software to contain bugs that have to be fixed with subsequent releases.

Apple has also grappled with other problems affecting new iPhones in the past - most notably, the complaints about poor reception and dropped calls that affected new iPhone 4 models when they were released in 2010.

Meanwhile, social media sites were buzzing Wednesday with reports that the aluminum shell of the iPhone 6 Plus is vulnerable to bending.

Some Twitter users claimed their phones showed a slight curving at one end after several hours in a pants pocket.

With a 5.5-inch screen, the iPhone 6 Plus is slightly longer and thinner than other iPhone models.

It’s not clear how widespread the complaints are.

One YouTube video showed someone bending an iPhone 6 Plus by applying extended pressure with his hands - not from normal sitting.

Both the iPhone 6 and the 6 Plus were given high ratings in a recent “breakability” test conducted by SquareTrade, a San Francisco firm that sells extended-protection plans for electronic devices.

The test did not include bending.

SquareTrade Chief Marketing Officer Ty Shay said that after reports of bending circulated online, two staffers at his firm tried to bend a pair of 6 Plus phones.

The male staffer was able to duplicate the results from the video, while the female staffer could not.

He said the bent phone appeared to still function normally.

Shay said his firm then checked and found a small number of bent older-model iPhones had been reported in the past.

“It does happen,” said Shay, “but it seems like for the most part it’s cosmetic damage.”

He suggested the bending is not a major issue.

Referring to the iPhone 6 Plus, he added, “I think it’s still a very durable phone.

But we’ll keep an eye on the claims.”

Apple did not comment on the reports of bending.

Cameroon army 'kills more than 100 Boko Haram fighters'

Cameroon said on Monday its soldiers had killed "more than 100" Boko Haram fighters during an attempted incursion by the Nigeria-based Islamist insurgents, while across the border thousands continued to flee the group's advances.

The Cameroonian army dealt "a severe setback" to Boko Haram during clashes in the north of the country on Saturday, government spokesman Issa Tchiroma Bakary said in a statement read out on state radio.

The statement, which could not be immediately verified, said Boko Haram militants fired two shells on the town of Fotokol in Cameroon's northern tip, on the border with Nigeria.

"There were no casualties reported on the Cameroonian side," the statement said.

"Our defence forces responded vigorously with mortar fire aimed at the positions held by units of the Boko Haram terrorist group. The Cameroonian response resulted in over 100 deaths among the aggressors."

The Boko Haram militants were pushed back towards the Nigerian border town of Gamboru Ngala, separated only by a footbridge from Cameroon, which they seized over a week ago.

- Exodus -

Meanwhile, panicked residents continued to flee their homes in northeast Nigeria on Monday in fear of Islamist attacks.

The exodus from Mubi, the commercial hub of Adamawa state, began on Sunday after the insurgents seized the town of Michika around 40 kilometres (25 miles) away the day before.

Boko Haram has seized control of a number of towns in Yobe, Borno and Adamawa states in recent weeks, prompting fears the government could soon lose control of the entire region.

"With the fall of Michika into the hands of Boko Haram, Mubi is seen as their next destination," Mubi resident Habu Bala told AFP.

The fear of attack grew on Monday after the families of police officers were ordered to evacuate, said resident Muhammad Maishanu.

The Nigerian military has appeared largely powerless to stop the militants' advance.

Residents in Michika said airforce jets were circling above the town but were unable to strike because the insurgents had taken cover in civilian houses.

In Mubi, where thousands have taken refuge in recent weeks, locals were thronging the main bus depot on Monday.

"The increasing large number of passengers far exceeds available vehicles, which has resulted in commotion as people jostle and struggle to secure seats on available buses and taxis. They just want to get out," said Samaila Ado, who works at the coach station.

- 'Capturing everywhere' -

The United States last week said it was alarmed by reports that Boko Haram had captured the Borno town of Bama and the possibility of an attack on the state capital, Maiduguri, 70 kilometres away.

The spokesman of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Maiduguri, Gideon Obasogie, said he fled the town on Sunday.

"Thousands of others have also left Mubi for Yola for fear of attack. The Boko Haram militants are just capturing everywhere," he told AFP.

"The Catholic church in Maiduguri diocese is gradually crumbling. A priest in Michika had to scale a fence yesterday to avoid being killed. He had to pass through some bush and mountains before he finally made it to Yola."

Security fears prompted the indefinite closure of the Adamawa State University in Mubi, according to a university statement.

In October 2012, Boko Haram fighters were blamed for shooting dead at least 40 polytechnic students at their off-campus hostels in the town.

The military has claimed it recaptured Bama in ground and air offensives, killing 50 insurgents in a battle near the town at the weekend.

Independent confirmation was not immediately available and in an audio message, a purported Boko Haram spokesman named Abu Zinnira refuted the claim.

The insurgents threatened to add to their territorial gains, he said.

It was not possible to verify the authenticity of the recording but AFP received the message from the same channels as previous Boko Haram videos.

Good Bye Marx! Hungary cleans up for Orban's revolution

logo-en

Good Bye Marx! Hungary cleans up for Orban's revolution

Budapest's Corvinus University is no hotbed of communist troublemakers and far from nostalgic for the old regime, but students are pining for a cherished bronze of Karl Marx removed last week.

When communism fell in Hungary 25 years ago, so did the many statues of Lenin and other heroes but the monument to Marx remained standing at the prestigious institution in the capital.

Last weekend, the four-metre (12-foot) statue of the father of communism -- installed just three years after Soviet tanks crushed an uprising in Hungary in 1956 -- finally went.

"We have to strengthen and show our Corvinus identity, which is lacking now," said Zsolt Rostovanyi, rector of the university in Budapest, known until 1990 as Karl Marx University.

"The Marx statue is not part of that identity."

For many students - not yet born during Hungary's more than four decades of communist rule -- this is a shame.

The imposing effigy in the entrance hall -- seated, brow furrowed, clutching a book assumed to be his famous "Das Kapital" -- was something of a mascot, a figure of fun.

New students were photographed next to him on their first day and again when they graduated, slotting their diplomas into Marx's outstretched hand to be snapped by family and friends.

"At freshers' parties the bar is in front of the statue, so it's like Marx is serving the drinks," Patricia, a third-year student, told AFP before the statue was taken away.

Other pranks included putting a heart in Marx's hand on Valentine's Day.

Used study books were often sold in front of it, and "Let's meet at Marx" was a common refrain among undergraduates.

- 'Racist and classist' -

But the fate of the statue -- it was taken to a historical exhibition at the university, with its replacement yet to be decided -- throws up more serious questions.

Even though Rostovanyi denies any political pressure, an open letter to the university from state secretary for human resources Bence Retvari in January said that Marx was "racist and classist".

The German thinker's writings "laid the foundation for inhuman dictatorships and genocides of the 20th century," Retvari wrote.

Others suggest the statue's removal is part of Prime Minister Viktor Orban's "revolution" to revamp this country of 10 million people, and not just aesthetically.

A former anti-communist radical turned dyed-in-the-wool conservative, the 51-year-old -- returned to power this April, again with a landslide -- is seen as bent on reforming Hungary's economy, institutions and social fabric after decades of left-wing misrule.

Father-of-five Orban has vowed to create an "illiberal democracy" and has praised Russia under President Vladimir Putin as a "successful model" -- prompting some pundits to label him a populist autocrat .

Following on from independent media, activists say his latest target appears to be foreign-funded non-governmental organisations, which he calls "paid foreign activists".

In recent weeks, police raided several such NGOs for alleged financial irregularities.

Human Rights Watch called it "yet another step to intimidate civil society".

Part and parcel of Orban's mission, critics say, has been the renaming and rearranging of public squares, and Marx's removal -- no matter how tiny the appeal of Marxism to students today -- fits into this.

"It could be an important symbolic part of the government's narrative of spearheading a revolution since their election victory in 2010," said historian Andras Mink from the Central European University.

"For them Marx represents continuity between communism and the two chaotic decades of post-communism. The government feels that after their new election win in April, they can have a final caesura and break with the past," Mink told AFP.

"No matter what affect he and his thoughts had on history, this is only a statue, it belongs to the university," said Erzsebet Hamar, a student starting her second year.

"I will miss it."

SpaceX cargo ship arrives at International Space Station

WASHINGTON, Sept 23, 2014 (AFP) - SpaceX's unmanned Dragon spacecraft arrived Tuesday at the International Space Station (ISS) with a cargo of supplies, including freeze-dried meals, 20 live lab mice and a 3D printer.

The space station's robotic arm grabbed the approaching vessel at 6:52 am (1052 GMT), live images on NASA television showed.

"Dragon is now firmly on the end of the station's robotic arm," a NASA commentator said.

The spacecraft will stay at the ISS for about a month as astronauts unload its cargo and repack it with 3,200 pounds (1,450 kilograms) of material to return to Earth.

Japan's bullet train hits half century

logo-en

Japan's bullet train hits half century

Fifty years ago, the first bullet train pulled out of Tokyo station and hurtled across the countryside, heralding Japan's arrival as a modern economic powerhouse with a transport system soon to become the envy of the world.

Less than two decades after a bitter World War II defeat that left much of the country in ruins, Japan was at the cutting edge with its sleek, airplane-shaped "shinkansen" that glided over great distances of newly-laid track.

"With the start of the shinkansen, we had a feeling that the starving time would end and Japan would change dramatically," recalled Fumihiro Araki, a former railway engineer.

"The shinkansen aimed to be the world's fastest train; it gave people hope and made Japan look forward," said 73-year-old Araki, now deputy director at the Railway Museum in Omiya, north of Tokyo, where the first engine -- named "Hikari" (light) -- is housed.

"It was nicknamed the 'superexpress of dreams' and actually gave Japanese people a dream," he added.

The bullet train unveiled on October 1, 1964 was the centrepiece of Japan's coming out party, which would begin in earnest a week later with the Tokyo Olympics.

It proved Japan had caught up with -- and even surpassed -- other developed countries.

Never mind that its construction had lumbered Japan with huge debts as its runaway budget spiralled out of control, or that public opposition to the project had been fierce.

- Celebrated blend of old and new -

The shinkansen connected Japan's two major urban centres, Tokyo and Osaka, by way of 66 tunnels and 96 bridges at speeds of up to 210 kilometres (130 miles) an hour, shortening travel times by a whopping two and a half hours.

That meant a businessman could travel from Tokyo to Osaka and back again in a day.

It also lassoed both urban centres for people who wanted to go to concerts or to go shopping in the new consumer economy.

It also brought top tourist spots like the ancient capital of Kyoto much closer, and allowed passengers a majestic view of Mount Fuji as the gleaming new train sped past, simultaneously giving Japan the picture that sums up its celebrated blend of old and new.

"The shinkansen helped enhance Japan's economic competitiveness by accelerating the concentration of population and industries in Tokyo," said Osuke Itazaki, a senior analyst at SMBC Nikko Securities in Tokyo.

It was also credited with "boosting mobilisation of people around the country, and it is still playing that role," said Itazaki.

The network expanded over the following decades to connect more parts of the mountainous country, and now covers all major population centres on the main island of Honshu and the southern island of Kyushu.

- Legendary punctuality -

The system has almost legendary punctuality rates with the average delay considerably less than a minute.

Today, bullet trains leave Tokyo for Osaka up to every three minutes and travel the 515 kilometres in two hours and 33 minutes.

Whether Japan can ever regain its crown remains to be seen.

Ultra speedy magnetic levitation -- maglev -- trains, which hover 10 centimetres (4 inches) above the tracks and are propelled by magnets, are in development, with a proven top speed of 581 kilometres per hour on a test track.

The plan is to launch maglev services between Tokyo and the central city of Nagoya by 2027.

By 2045 they are expected to link Tokyo and Osaka in just one hour and seven minutes, less than half the current time.

But there are doubts the scheme will ever come to pass.

The costs are astronomical -- estimated at nearly $100 billion just for the stretch to Nagoya, with more than 80 percent of the route expected to go through costly tunnels.

Analysts question whether a shrinking and ageing Japan can really afford to saddle itself with a project this big, even with such an elongated time frame.

The 127 million-strong population, of whom around a quarter are 65 or over, is expected to shrink to 86 million over the next forty years, with four in ten people expected to be elderly in the coming decades.

"I don't expect Japanese people's overall demand for travel will increase radically even once the maglev starts operating," said Takaji Suzuki, an expert in transportation systems and economy at Nagoya-based Chukyo University.

The maglev project was probably given the go-ahead because the shinkansen to Osaka is ageing and will need to be refurbished at some point, he said.

"When you think of Japan's demographic transition and balance, it's true that the company going ahead with constructing the (maglev) system is not in an optimistic situation," said Suzuki.

Paris fashion takes to catwalks

Paris fashion takes to catwalks

Flamboyant designer Jean Paul Gaultier's last ready-to-wear show will provide an emotional highlight of nine days of fashion collections due to get underway in Paris on Tuesday.

The 62-year-old showman of the catwalks is to bow out of ready-to-wear after nearly 40 years to concentrate on his couture collections.

The designer has said the decision was taken after an "in-depth assessment" of his eponymous fashion house's future with Spanish fragrance and fashion group Puig, which has a majority stake.

Gaultier's last show, which will be held on Saturday, is one of over 90 scheduled for the next week-and-a-half.

After New York, London and Milan, other highlights will be first collections by Georgia's David Koma for Mugler and France's Julie de Libran for Sonia Rykiel.

Three names also making their debut in the Paris ready-to wear calendar are Japan's Anrealage, the United States Hood by Air and India's Rahul Mishra.

Stephane Wargnier, new executive president of the French Federation of Couture, said Gaultier's last show was likely to be spectacular and upbeat, albeit tinged with sadness.

"Everyone will want to be there and I think it's certainly going to be a very moving moment," he said.

In recent years Gaultier, considered one of France's most talented designers, has been the subject of a major retrospective by the Museum of Fine Arts in Montreal.

Since 2011, the exhibition has been seen by a million visitors worldwide and is due to arrive in Paris in 2015.

One room in the exhibition is devoted to "Eurotrash", the outlandish adult television show hosted by Gaultier and Antoine de Caunes on Britain's Channel 4 during the 1990s.

The designer said earlier this month that "commercial constraints as well as the frenetic pace of collections" had left him little freedom to explore fresh ideas and innovate.

"The pace is harder than in the past, retail demands several deliveries per season, so we are no longer in an era when one calmly does a collection every six months," Wargnier said.

"It's the way it is in fashion now and everyone adapts in their own way," he added.

Beehive hair, Mad Men skirts kick off Paris fashion week

Beehive hair, Mad Men skirts kick off Paris fashion week

Nine days of Paris fashion got off to a retro start Tuesday with a 1960s-inspired collection from Corrie Nielsen featuring beehive hair and Mad Men-style looks with futuristic, voluminous twists.

Citing 1960s icons Brigitte Bardot and Jane Birkin as influences, Nielsen dedicated the collection to "the women of the 1960s who shaped and influenced the world as we see it," including her late mother.

London-based Nielsen said her "Single Girl" ready-to-wear collection was all about a "strong independent and active woman, whilst remaining true to her simultaneous delicacy, adolescence and slenderness".

Plunging hood-like backs, and oversized tops dominated her spring/summer 2015 collection in a palette of off-white, cream, beige, gold and dark brown.

Among the less wearable looks was an entirely transparent dress with nothing more to it than the skimpiest of knickers and a series of circular padded strips in place of the skirt.

The show was among the first of over 90 due to be held over the next nine days, the highlight of which will be Jean Paul Gaultier's last ready-to-wear show before he stops to concentrate on couture.

Speaking backstage, Nielsen told reporters she had "huge respect" for the flamboyant designer and would be very sad to see him go.

"He's had an incredible career. I mean incredible. He's been a huge inspiration to myself and I wish him all the luck," she said.

[caption id="attachment_18666" align="alignnone" width="307"]21-220245Amphipolis_Caryatid_001 (Photo - Athens News Agency)[/caption]

The two caryatids found at the Kasta Tomb in Ancient Amphipolis were uncovered entirely by excavators, the ministry of Culture announced on Sunday, showing they are standing on marble bases and wearing shoes.

The full height of each caryatid is 2.27 metres and they are wearing chitons - or full-length draped dresses, tied in the middle - and a long himation, or a shawl-like cover over their dress, with fringes and several folds.

They are wearing kothornoi, resembling platform boots or shoes and best known for being worn by ancient Greek actors.

Their shoes preserve traces of red and yellow pigments, while their toes are depicted in very fine detail.

The bases they stand on have not been fully cleared.

They are 1.33 metres in length and 0.68 metres in width, and their height has been uncovered to about 0.30 metres.

The two bases are 1.68 metres apart from each other.

Sections of the caryatids' arms were found near them.

In the continuing excavation, there is evidence of yet another room lying beyond them.

According to the ministry, oxygen and monoxide measurements inside the chamber are at normal levels, with a high humidity index (87%) and temperature ranging between 21.5C and 22.70C.

Support and other technical work is continuing.

Cricket teams trek to world's highest game on 'roof of Africa'

Cricket teams trek to world's highest game on 'roof of Africa'

Map, tent, water, food: check.

All needed to scale the snow-capped peak of Africa's highest mountain Kilimanjaro.

Bat, ball, stumps, pads: check.

Also needed when you're hoping to break the world record for the highest game of cricket ever played.

Two teams are taking part in a gruelling eight-day trek up the vast extinct volcano, to play a full Twenty20 game in the ice-covered crater just below its rugged peak, at 5,785 metres (19,000 feet).

"Kilimanjaro is definitely not somewhere I thought I'd bowl a few overs, but the challenge thanks to the altitude is huge... bring it on!"

English bowling legend Ashley Giles, one of the captains of the mixed professional and amateur teams, told AFP.

The eccentric dream, to hear the thwack of willow on leather over three miles (five kilometres) high, was thought up by expedition leader David Harper, a British hotel real estate consultant.

Harper said he planned the match in a bar after his wife told him the "only way he was ever likely to play cricket at the highest level would be if he played on the top of a mountain".

After a week of climbing that began Saturday, teams plan to reach the peak at dawn on Friday.

But they then must play a full game in the crater of the dormant volcano, laying down a plastic track for the wicket over the ash before playing in the thin, freezing air surrounded by vast blocks of ice.

- Rain won't stop play -

South African icon Makhaya Ntini, the country's first black Test player, is also taking part in what he called an "massive, exciting challenge".

There will be half the level of oxygen than at sea level for the game, doubling energy needed for the match.

The teams are taking oxygen tanks for medical emergencies.

But while flurries of snow may be possible in the bitter cold, organiser Harper promises that at least "rain is unlikely to stop play".

Qualified umpires will ensure the charity game is played properly -- and is eligible to break the record.

The mainly English team also includes players from Australia, Canada, Kenya and South Africa.

"It is a incredible challenge," said Heather Knight, the other team captain, who back home is vice-captain of the English women's team.

The expedition of over 30 players and umpires -- and an AFP journalist -- are making the trek to the top, along with a Tanzanian support team of over a hundred, helping to carry the kit and food up to the top.

The current record for the world's highest game is 5,165 metres (16,945 feet), played in the Himalayas at Everest base camp in Nepal in 2009.

If successful, the game on Kilimanjaro will be over 600 metres higher.

Alan Curr, who played in the 2009 game on Everest, mourned the possible loss of his record and what he joked as his "best conversation starter", but gave his full support to the teams.

"The whole point of our trip was to inspire people to get off the sofa and do something with their lives," Curr told AFP from Japan, where he now teaches cricket.

"I think they'll find that once it's done it was not all about the record; but raising funds, making new friends, and doing something that they will talk about forever."

While no technical climbing skills are needed, playing a game at two-thirds the height of Everest will have considerable risks, including acute mountain sickness.

Curr, author of "Cricket on Everest", warned climbers to take care.

"We saw people being carried down from Everest base camp on stretchers, and two people died on the trek at the same time as we were there -- and those guys weren't doing 22-yard (20-metre) shuttle runs in pads and a helmet," Curr said.

"It's no jolly in the park."

Players are raising funds for charities including Cancer Research and conservation charity Tusk Trust, which works to stem rampant poaching of elephants and other animals.

Funds raised will also go towards building Rwanda's first international cricket pitch.

The game is growing rapidly in popularity there after being introduced by those who returned after fleeing genocide 20 years ago.

Three former England captains -- David Gower, Nasser Hussain and Andrew Strauss -- all offered their support, as well as England women's captain Charlotte Edwards.

"They must be daft, the lot of them! It's taking cricket to ridiculous heights," Gower said.

"This is an immense challenge," said Hussain, poking fun at old teammate Giles, warning, "Don’t forget to take some spare match balls, especially for when Gilo is bowling."

Strauss warned "the bowlers may struggle" on a freezing, high-altitude mountain pitch.

"Climbing up the highest mountain in Africa to set up stumps, unpack the cucumber sandwiches and play the highest ever game of cricket will be a truly remarkable achievement," BBC cricket commentator Jonathan Agnew said.

New Ryukyu "king" and "queen" selected at Shurijo Castle Park event

A selection ceremony for a new “king” and “queen” took place at the event “Mid-Autumn Feast” held in the Una forecourt of Shurijo Castle in Naha on September 7.

Twenty-year-old company employee Daichi Teruya was chosen in the role of “king” and 25-year-old nursing teacher Marina Oyama as the role of “queen.”

Their first jobs will be to attend a swearing-in ceremony on November 1 in which the Sapposhi or envoy of the Mandarin Chinese Emperor will bestow the imperial seal on the new King of Ryukyu, followed by a parade in the Una forecourt.

The new “king” and “queen” will take part in events hosted by Shurijo Castle Park over the next twelve months.

The selection event had 14 applicants for "king" and 29 for "queen".

Wearing a brightly-colored crown, the new “king” Teruya said, smiling, “I am surprised and delighted.”

He went on to say, “I want to convey our unique culture and history to people all around the world.”

Dressed in showy costume, Oyama said in tears, “I am so happy.”

She continued, “I would like children to know the queen of the time-honored Ryukyu Kingdom. I will do my best to continue this tradition.”

Before the event, the kumiodori play Nidou tekiuchi and other plays were performed.

The spectators enjoyed a fantastic evening.
